My poem, “Beware, the Fair-Weather Friend.”

Keep your friends close, and your acquaintances in your pocket.
Keep that locket under your shirt, someone could snatch your heart off your neck.
A person who is only there when they need something
would rob you blind and organize the search for evidence.
Someone grinning from ear to ear in times of benevolence –
a fat cat conditioned to appear at my feet when it’s time for treats.
This person shows up just for the cake,
but remember kitty cats are lazy and won’t clean up after the party.
The person who only uses you to get close to your other friends
won’t hang with you through thick and thin.
You were just a rental.
Your time shared was always a means to an end.
Fear and insecurities create tunnels before the eyes.
Some prefer to fall back, rather than hear a new point of view.
A person who needs to control the narrative of the relationship,
will burn bridges rather than compromise.
Your window of opportunity is narrow,
stop everything you’re doing for the forgetful and the flighty.
A pleasure seeker won’t stick around if they’re not entertained.
Make sure to distract with bright lights and fun games.
A person who doesn’t take ownership for their actions
turns everything against you make flaws known and
says you’re attacking them. Just walk away,
they’ve never been held accountable until now.
A person who’s awfully fake; not two but three-faced,
invents personalities for different cliques
and terminates relationships when exposed.
Stay on alert: keep your eyes open and your heart closed.
So, don’t trust me, please. I’m not wood to lean on.
I won’t help you move, I won’t even dog sit.
You can’t borrow sugar from me, even though I am your neighbor
​Don’t ask me for any favors.
​I’ve become the very thing I despise,
​A wolf dressed in a dear friend’s clothing, smiling just to get by.
​I’ve been battered and taken advantage of by too many.
​Now I’m the fair-weather friend, now I’m the turtle dove.
