MEMORIES [BEDMO DISCO DUB]

For the second mix in THE SOUND OF best before: trilogy, I've taken a trip back into the event's early days, as a "party in a basement". Whereas the first volume was all about downtempo warm-up flavours, this one's about dancing (like you mean it) in a sweaty cellar, with other like-minded souls. As a result, the mix flits between house of various sorts (deep, jackin', acid, soulful, US, UK, hip-house etc), disco (old and 'nu'), hip-hop, tracks with cowbells and broken beat. The tracks are a mixture of stuff played over the years, forgotten gems and what I would describe as "basement classics"

This episode features a lightly edited recording of a conversation between author Matt Anniss and DJ, producer and party promoter Winston Hazel (Forgemasters, Jive Turkey, Kabal) at We Out Here festival in August 2021. Produced as part of Join The Future’s celebration of 25 years of bassline (which also included an article for DJ magazine and various features on our website), this is the first of a two-part potted history of bassline – a style of dance music that has sometimes struggled for recognition despite its popularity. This episode focuses on the early years of bassline, briefly explaining the birth and growth of the ‘bassline house’ sound and scene in and around Yorkshire. The first volume in a new ongoing mix series named in honour of my home for the last 20 years, Redfield in Bristol. That's my back yard/container garden in the image, and pretty much the view from the window at the back of my record room. This first volume in the series was inspired by time spent in the back yard in June 2023, and in part made to play out there on hot afternoons, sultry evenings and as the sun goes down. It's a largely slow motion affair, joining the dots between old and new music, Balearic beats, classic chill-out cuts, head-nodding 90s trip-hop, dub, lovers rock, nu-jazz and loved-up low-tempo disco. I hope you enjoy it.

On October 20th 2023, I played a unique, specially-themed set at the DC23 Afterparty - a Friday night club event at Jabberwocky, Sheffield, which brought the curtain down on the first academic conference hosted by the Dance Cult Research Network (the global community behind the Dance Cult journal).

This is the recording of that set, which is made up entirely of tracks with a Yorkshire connection – IE either made or released in the county, or by exiled Yorkshire producers/crews. Expect a mix of bleep & bass, Sheffield klang, dub-fired warehouse-ready workouts, bassline, "heaters and panel beaters", sub-heavy breakbeat rattlers, and much more besides. Oh, and lots of sub-bass!

As some of you may know, in my day job I'm a journalist and author. Recently, I wrote an in-depth article about the origins, history and legacy of the often overlooked style called "bleep and bass", or simply "bleep". I thought this was be a good excuse to re-upload a mix I did back in 2010 for Hivemind.fm, joining the dots between original bleep records and those that have come since that were in some way inspired by the style. Since compiling this I have many more records in the style, and I'd probably do it differently if I was mixing it now, but hopefully it gives a good introduction to the sound.

At 9am on Sunday 2nd June 2024, I found myself sat behind the decks in the 'Espacio' tent at Watching Trees 2024 - Optimo and the Ransom Note's superb micro-festival - sound-tracking a gorgeously sunny morning after the night before. I played a heady mixture of field recordings, speech, ambient records, fourth world tracks, Balearic bits and nostalgic downtempo grooves old and new. Sadly, I didn't record the set, so decided to lay down a mix at home in the same style, inspired by mix experience (and the other excellent ambient sets played in Espacio). MONEY CRAZY [BEDMO DISCO EXTENSION]

To promote the launch of my PhD research project, which focuses on rural and coastal rave culture in East Anglia (the counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk), here's a bonus episode of Join The Future on Noods. It features a recording of a conversation between myself, local legend DJ Richie and host Jonathan P Watts, which took place at the PrimeYarc community arts space in Great Yarmouth in March 2023, as part of a tour promoting the updated edition of my book Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music. In the conversation, we naturally talk about the stories showcased in the book, but also the importance of documenting previously hidden histories and the early dance music scene in East Anglia – including raves, unlikely early 'superclubs' in Great Yarmouth, and the early stages of my PhD research. Join The Future: MIX 04 - JD TWITCH (THE 'STEPPERS MIX')

In early 2016, Red Bull Music Academy Daily published an essay I'd written telling the story of "ambient house" and the related chill-out movement between 1988 and '95. To promote the piece, I also put together this "mix-umentary", which was broadcast on RBMA Radio and featured for a number of years on their now-defunct website.

Following a number of requests, I've republished the essay on the Join The Future website. You can now read it here: https://jointhefuture.net/2020/09/10/long-read-the-story-of-chill-out/  Since this mix was created to accompany the article, it made sense to re-upload it here.

The mix itself features a combination of music that inspired the movement, early ambient house/chill out tracks, music of historical importance (IE foundational releases), and those by people interviewed for the article. It also contains spoken word snippets taken from my interview recordings (Steve Hillage, Mixmaster Morris, Alex Paterson, Kevin Foakes AKA DJ Food, Jonah Sharp, Thomas Fehlmann and Coldcut's Matt Black all feature), and some other mind-altering samples. Stylistically, it was inspired by the kind of open-minded musical journeys offered up in original chill-out rooms during the rave era.
