Sometimes we hold on to pain like losing someone we love or childhood trauma. Keeping the past alive, holding onto this pain, makes it difficult for us to be open to new relationships and new opportunities that exist in the present. 

Bring to mind any emotional baggage from your past. Maybe you got hurt by a former lover, or friend. or maybe something terrible happened to you as a child and you’ve held onto the suffering. It is time to let that go. 

Visualize your emotions and that suffering you’ve held onto as an old and weathered bag. It can be a book bag, or a briefcase, a suitcase, whatever you prefer. Imagine every where you go, you drag this old beat up bag around with you. Think about how much this bag weighs you down. When you carry a heavy bag for so long, your shoulders become soar. 

When you experienced that pain, a terrible moment as a child, whatever it is, when you experienced that, you were hurting and needed to process your pain and understand what it meant. So think about what message your pain is trying to tell you. What does it mean? 

This answer may not come right away, but eventually it will become clear to you. Take a few more moments to think about why you experienced this suffering. 

These old feelings you’ve been carrying, no longer serve you. This suffering has exhausted it’s purpose. It’s time now to let it all go.

Thank the suffering, the pain for it’s service to your life. This may seem strange. To thank your suffering. But by doing this, you make it a much easier and smoother process to let go of the pain. So thank all the pain, the suffering, the trauma for it’s service.

Now imagine yourself letting go of your bag. If you have a bag, let it fall off your back and shoulders, if it’s a suitcase, let it drop to the floor. Imagine how much lighter it feels to have let it all go. Your bag disappears and is no longer. 

Continue to imagine how much lighter it feels to have let all of that go. Visualize yourself as lighter, unencumbered and free. 

Begin to breathe deeper and relax for a few moments. 

See and feel your future opening up before you. It’s full of promise and opportunity. Do this for a few moments as you breathe and relax. 

Now return to your breath. Watch it as you inhale peace and exhale tension. Allow your breath to bring you back as we end the meditation. 

I like to wiggle my toes and fingers, but do whatever helps you come out of a meditation. At your own pace come on back and open your eyes.
