In the late 60’s the Moody Blues were one of the first few bands to take “pop” music out of the “boy girl” idiom and into a progressive, imaginative and partly spiritual realm, using the album as a vehicle to take you on a musical journey, rather than an album with one hit and filled with a lot of fillers.

Young musicians like myself were transported into a new realm of musical and songwriting possibilities.

As well as the quality of songwriting, their sound was very much shaped by Mike Pinder’s use of the Mellotron. At that time a new instrument none of us had heard of. Their use of the Mellotron influenced many bands such as The Beatles (Strawberry Fields Forever) Yes, King Crimson and Genesis who used the Mellotron extensively.

I particularly loved these three songs from their 1972 album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour and over the years I have occasionally thought about recording my own versions just for the fun of it.

This last month I set about recording my “SEL-ONE MAN BAND” versions. I have played and sung everything on all three tracks.

For those that know the album, I have remained faithful to the original arrangements and parts, and have used my virtual Mellotron to try and recreate Mike Pinder’s parts to keep the atmosphere as close as possible. I have though taken the drum parts and some of the guitar parts much further than the originals and have made the tracks all in all much punchier than the originals.

I recorded these tracks purely for myself as a tribute to The Moody Blues, and am really happy with how they have turned out. Should you take a listen, my only request is to take a little time to sit quietly, and listen on the best sound system you have, or really good headphones.
