🎶 What are shamanic mantras and chants? The term "mantra" originally comes from Sanskrit and means something like "tool of the mind" manas = mind, trayate = to liberate. In shamanic practice, it is usually a sacred utterance, syllable, word, sentence, or song/chant that is repeated in order to: Achieve a certain state of consciousness (trance). Establish contact with the spirit world. Request healing, protection, or spiritual power. Unlike classical Hindu or Buddhist mantras, which are often in Sanskrit (e.g., "Om Mani Padme Hum" or "Om"), shamanic chants can use the language of the respective culture but may also include simple, repetitive syllables, calls, or natural sounds.

 1. The Drum as the Core Perhaps the most important "instrument" in shamanic practice is the shamanic drum (frame drum). Its steady, repetitive rhythm – often around 4 to 7 beats per second – serves to put the shaman and participants into a trance-like or altered state of consciousness. Chanting or mantra-singing often occurs in sync with this rhythm. 

2. Purposes of Use Shamanic mantras or chants are used for various purposes: Soul journey: 
To travel to the "Lower World" or "Upper World" and establish contact with power animals, spirit guides, or ancestors. 
Healing: 
To invoke healing spirits or to dispel negative energies or blockages (often with specific healing chants).
Protection: 
For building an energetic shield for oneself, a place, or a person.
Ceremonies: 
To accompany rituals, such as initiations, seasonal changes, or gratitude ceremonies.
Grounding and Connection: 
To connect with the energy of the Earth, the sky, or specific natural forces (fire, water, wind).

Plant songs (Icaros):

Imitation of the sounds of power animals (eagle, wolf, bear) to summon their power or to identify with them...

Chants that invoke the elements (e.g., 'Air I am – Fire I am – Water, Earth and Spirit I am, I am' or songs that greet the cardinal directions)...
Syllables and sounds:
 Simple, repetitive sound sequences, often without direct linguistic meaning, whose power lies in their vibration and the intention with which they are sung.
