Mat Ranson aka Focal Point, previously produced analogue IDM, hip-hop and techno under the Fisk Industries and Kwaidan aliases with releases on labels as Highpoint Lowlife (UK) and Mush (USA) and appearances on BBC Radio 1's and Resonance FM. After a hiatus, constant development of style brought him to the Focal Point project: an exploration of techno, industrial, rhythm and bass. In the third SEMCAST artist mix he showcases this signature sound - in various tempos but focused on a very certain, dark and gothic vibe and foreshadows his premiere on Soul Ex Machina, coming up at the end of this year.

Soul Ex Machina proudly presents the first appearance of 2023 and also fourth installment of SEMCAST mix series focused on the label artists, featuring Czech Republic based producer with Slovakian origin - EchoBoy, who recently made some serious noise on labels like Moonshine Recordings, Solway Dub and Energy of Dub. Formerly known as part of digital reggae duo Riddim Tuffa as Adam Riddim Tuffa, with strong foundations in roots, reggae and dub music with its unique aesthetics, EchoBoy project is logical development of his style, heading deeper into the soundsystem sound and turning in dubstep influences with focus on current electronic music sound. It is a big pleasure to welcome EchoBoy on the Soul Ex Machina SEMCAST, showcasing one hundred percent personal production mix, which will be followed by his major release, appearing on the label in the following months.

Welcome to the fifth Soul Ex Machina SEMCAST! The second appearance of 2023 in the mix series focused on the label and affiliate artists, we have the great pleasure of featuring the core Soul Ex Machina member, Brno / Czech Republic based producer with Slovakian roots -  the one and only don Johney. On the occasion of his freshest release on the Soul Ex Machina, which appeared almost three years after his label debut, and series of releases on the likes of Deviant Audio, Shakhta records or the Coki´s label AWD. Johney is renowned for his wide musical knowledge and ability to combine elements into unseen variations, which he showcases in his current studio mix. Expect nothing less like journey of bass and rhythms full of groovy moodswings, music both "coming from" and inspirations of the artist. It is great to welcome Johney back on the label and already look forward to his future endeavors!

PDCH is part of dj scene in Brno for over a decade now. Recently he's resident of club pul.pit and family member of alredy legenday Rakosi as regular dj, helper and dancer while also playing in clubs all over Brno and often also in Prague and other cities around. Pavel created his specific "whatever" approach to djing where he rarely prepares his material and rather leaves it for the magic of the moment. You can hear him spin tracks ranging from zero to around 140 bpm while keepin' it in various moods of house, techno, breaks, trance and what nots. For SEMCAST, exception has been made, carefully selected showcase of dnb/halftempo appreciation is what comes your way...

Djrum's first release since 2019, the Meaning’s Edge EP is an introduction to a whole new world. For the artist also known as Felix Manuel, it was created in the final stretches of six rather traumatic years work. Having carefully honed his techniques and aesthetics, and learned some hard-won emotional lessons over this time, finally he began to work in a quicker, lighter fashion – and to cleanse his palate a little by bringing in a fresh ingredient: his own flute playing. For listeners, though, it will serve as an appetiser, a way into the delights and complexities of this new phase of his creativity.
 
It’s a serious work in its own right, mind. The use of flutes – including Bansuri, Shakuhatchi, Western Classical, and synthesised all blending and blurring into one another – gives it a coherence and a sense of airiness that unites the five tracks over half an hour, however divergent their beats get. And as in all his music, 
 
Here you find the opening track ‘Codex’ which alone touches on OG dubstep, Aphex Twin-like braindance, post-classical exploration, movie themes and more. The gentle tones and melodies that rise up out of it perfectly conjure Felix’s running theme of a protective bubble that provides a sense of safety and tranquillity even as the beats and acid gurgles and spurts all around it conjure up the slings and arrows of life’s difficulties.
 

… and it’s only just the beginning. This is the return of a master craftsperson more focused than ever on his vision and vocation and ready to blow your mind all over again.
