PEPMIX010 - Jonny Chorley

An introduction into the relentless and despairingly creative mind of @filippo-zenna; this mix takes the form of a sonic dreamscape that walks us through an introspective journey of ambience, spoken word, dub, new-wave house, and an overawing presence of psychedelic jazz-funk.

The Naples resident and @periodica affiliate performs a poem he has written, and has mentioned that the mix takes on the themes of solitude and 'restless eyes in a modern world', fake feelings and the idea of passing through a vortex 'where all is going wrong and you can't see the light, but at the end there is hope'.

This is an incredible listen and Filippo has given us the words to his poetry:

"Incrocio occhi. Molti sono spenti, tanti atrofizzati, desiderosi solo di una posa. Vestono un sorriso per qualche secondo, poi s’eclissano. Vivono per mostrare un mondo che non esiste, non per esplorarlo ed illuminarsi davvero. Cerco la profondità. Raro toccarla. È prerogativa degli ultimi superstiti del sogno, ormai confinati dentro la disperazione, emarginati in una dimensione scomoda. In cui tutto scorre lento.
E' la corsa folle a disperdere le ultime risorse critiche, a trasformare gli occhi in semplici specchi che guardano il suolo, non più la luna. L’arte come ultimo rifugio, liberazione da una società clonata che indossa il trucco migliore, ma non s’accorge d’aver spento la luce".

He has titled the mix 'VIA D'USCITA', which means 'Exit'.

PEPMIX011 - Filippo Zenna: Via D'Uscita

Our 18th instalment comes via Rosie Ama. @Rosie-Ama-Cain makes up one half of DJ collective @WeAreKiaraScuro. Formerly known as ATLAS Radio, her and friend Nadia hosted shows on Reprezent Radio and Worldwide FM. 

Now part of the Balamii Radio family, their show spans ambient, EBM, new beat and electro. This has recently landed them a residency at Ghost Notes, a new Peckham-based music venue. Outside of radio and DJing, Rosie is an editor for London-based magazine Stamp The Wax.

Rosie's mix rides the intergalactic fringes of an eclectic selection of genres, falling through the mists of acid electronica.

We have our 19th PEPMIX up and ready to be listened to.

It's been long in the pipeline, but MLE has dropped us her PEPmix - and it's a ferocious torrent of distant rave-seeped sounds.

With her penchant for the darker taste in music, Rhythm Section's party starter has crafted 55 minutes of EBM and Techno, joining the dots with ugly, driving acid-lines and a unrelenting, dark atmosphere.

Since her appearance with us in November she has gone from strength to strength; starting a residency with Balamii Radio on every fourth Tuesday, & lining up a number of gigs - namely in Bristol with The ITT this Thursday. Other future parties include her playing at Corsica Studios and at Spectral's Leeds adventure to Wharf Chambers.

We've loved seeing Em's progression as an artist, as she continues to bring thunder to the London skyline, so stick this on and tie the laces to your running boots cus its full of chuffin' whizz.

PEPMIX013 - MLE

Whilst reverently scratching our chins at the idea of Adam Reid dropping most of these tracks in clubs over the course of 2 nights in Barcelona - we stand in awe at this disparate hour of bizarre and wacky selections from the man who has been bringing the unknown and un-understandable to Bristol for the past 5 years (as of 4 days ago!).

Whether it's been with the Schwet family or as Cacophonous Sarcophagus, Adam has been at the forefront of Bristol's experimental music scene and has been responsible for bringing over some of the most intriguing live acts the city has seen. Having been avid fans of Schwet for the past year or so, it is a great pleasure to present this mix to you all, and we hope you enjoy what is a truly terrific listen.

PEPMIX015 - DJ Schwet

After meeting @mrho post Noods party at the Black Swan last November, r' resident Gretty got to chewing his ear off and, upon finding a lot of common ground, invited him to send a mix in for us - and voila!

From Hong Kong, to Berlin, to our humble little series, this instalment is a peach of a mix from the man who’s released on some of our favourite labels (@clone-nl, @esp-institute and @cremeorganization to name a few), played in just about every city with a nightclub and co-founded the untouchable @klassewrecks alongside @lucalozano. 

Whilst his productions are geared towards heavy, breakbeat-driven techno bangers, as a DJ Ho likes to show off his expansive palette of energetic, groovy and emotional music. His PEPmix gives an insight into what’s been in his record box during monsoon season out in Hong Kong, digging through psychedelic funk, dark acid and weird, wonky far-Eastern electronics. 

We’ve been big fans of his for a while now so we’re delighted to have on board a man so talented and internationally revered – and a lovely bloke to boot. Stick this one on rain or shine.

PEPMIX016 - Mr. Ho

It was upon the evening of a late-2017 PLU party that EJ was first introduced to the vicarious power duo of 'Bristol's best DJs'; EC & AMOS. Within this evening, the CHAMP collective residents went round for round, tune for tune, during what was an endeavour into the true meaning of their 'Dance Party' moniker. To sum it up; in the midst of an exchange that lead to the phrase "It's like they've listened to every single album ever, and found all of the songs you'd never think to find" (Or something like that), both EC and AMOS agreed to do a mix.

Fast forward plenty of late night meetings at their awe-enforcing party-sets, and Isaac Stacey, aka EC Ryder, is the first up to deliver one hour of his wax-based bustle to our series.

One of the brains behind the Copper Sounds outfit, Isaac comes in with a ritualistic, racketing hour of syncopated drums, dissonant brass jazz structures, and curdling, metal-infused vocals that will purr as much as they lick. This is a non-stop train into the no-wave mindset of a fantastic and fascinating selector and is truly not to be missed.

PEPMIX017 - EC Ryder: And The Beat Goes ON

It is with pleasure, delight and pure vocal-house ecstasy that we welcome back one of our most admired selectors and man-of-many-names; DJ Ken, aka Ben ‘jimmy ben’ Cannon, aka Kenny Beats, aka Kenergy, aka Ken Banton.

Whether twisting the HPF to astronomical levels in the booth or gleaming dangerously joyful looks across the dancefloor, Ken is a well-known friendly face amongst party people in Leeds, Manchester and Wrexham.

Between imposing his long dank figure upon the Yorkshire skyline, working with computers and owning the runway for Vogue, Hugo Boss and Dior, he’s also a renowned party putter-onner. His projects include Soul Control, with a long-standing residency at Hi-Fi, and most recently, the mighty Mick’s, who have the frittin gat top daddio Gatto Fritto this Friday 26th October.

This mix isn't a far-cry from the exemplary taste and flow of his last edition, however the earlier rave sounds of a lost dancehall craze are replaced by those of the deep space halls once traversed by the cosmic maestros of techno, house, electro and dub.

PEPMIX018 - DJ Ken

For the 19th PEPMIX, we present to you a live recording of Robbie McDonald, AKA Open Ears. This has been taken from our recent 'Empty Spaces' event with Inter:Mission, at the marvellous Bakery 123Space on Stokes Croft, Bristol.

A self-taught, neo-classical pianist, Robbie brought an entrancing atmosphere to the Cafe area; bringing people to a meditative state, as they sat cross-legged to enjoy his spell-bounding performance. We have been speaking with Robbie about his music for what seems like forever, so to be able to invite him down and listen to him play was an enormous pleasure.

Introducing a delicate relationship with his keys to his forever yearning voice, Open Ears has created a beautiful rendition of his own emotions. He holds an incredibly deep connection with the pieces he delivers, and that was felt throughout the bakery in a soothing, yet emphatic fashion.

The reverberated sounds of the cafe play out throughout this recording, adding a nostalgic tinge to the performance and evoking Robbie's connection to his music, and to Empty Spaces.

PEPMIX019 - Robbie McDonald: OPEN EARS [LIVE]

There’s nothing we love more than getting the old gang together behind the Pioneers; hugs, chemistry, endless one-upmanship with our tunes, egos flying about like oil in a deep fat fryer and a caveman-esque fascination with any level of technological gimmickry – be that a scathing overuse of the filters offered on a club-standard mixer or bigging ourselves up to the nth degree over the mic, with reverb on, to a full club of people who want absolutely nothing from us but a modicum of humility and maturity until the big dogs come on. 

And here we have it. Warming up for the exceptional duo @SolarSF and @Mozhgan, the squad brought their A-game. Opening with Marko’s soothing rendition of Sami Pepper’s comicbook adventure into the unknown, we dragged the crowd through a thorny field of ambient, jazz, funk, new beat, techno and rapturous chants of ‘SEEEMII FUCKINN PEPPEREEEED’ to set the stage for us to be shown how the pros do it.

PEPMIX020A - Semi Peppered

@SolarSF and @Mozhgan have been kind enough to let us upload their barnstormer of a set from The Island, and by gum this one’s a humdinger. 

For those of you who live under rocks, Solar and Mozhgan popped over from San Francisco to give Bristol’s best venue a proper talking to - and a proper talking to they indeed gave it. The duo took us through selections of punk-laced EBM, futurist minimal synth, headbang techno and old-school acid drivers, solidifying their status as our favourite Bay Area couple! 

As a mix, it is unpredictable, obscure and diverse, but without meandering from a central theme of dark, moody, fun-as-fuck party slammers (DJ Bigos hit us up) - we feel incredibly blessed to have been able to host these two and add this to our humble little series.

Not to mention preserving one of our favourite parties, and some fond memories with 2 of our favourite guests!

PEPMIX020B -  Mozhgan & Solar

There is no greater feeling for us than when one of our nearest ‘n’ dearest leaves a top tier PEPMIX submission in the SP Inc. pigeonhole.
 
So when we asked the lovely Vid to do just that, not only did we singlehandedly broker an historic deal to usher in an unprecedented era of pan-Mersey peacetime, Vid ran with the brief and posted back a real home-run of a touchdown of a mix.

Vid (real name Vidyut Vardhan), the eclectic host of Netil Radio’s show ‘Radio Vid’, provided us with 2 hours of typically charismatic ambient textures. Vid’s shows are a delicate curation of Modern Classical, Jazz, Indian Raga, Dub, Acoustic Ambience, Space-Age Synths, and Soft-Pop, and track a devoted musical mind through his heritage in Delhi to his life in London via Liverpool. His shows reflect a minimalist appreciation of space, allowing his selections to breathe whilst giving the listener an opportunity to stop and consider.

The PEPMIX has it’s origins in a two-hour show that never aired from the start of lockdown, and has proved a source of reflection and serenity during these bullshit, turbulent times we find ourselves in. It is both a careful and genuine consideration of a shared chaotic experience, and a meditative spirit-booster. It’s even got Jeff Bridges in it. 

As a character who is very close to the crew, and one who has shared so much inspiration, knowledge, and good got-damn times, it is a pleasure to be able to feature Vid. We hope you can enjoy this as much as we have done.

Southampton's most sagacious crustacean rests his weathered shell and pulls from his bountiful shelves a mix one could surely only dream of… 

Our beshelled friend, Kayne the Hermit; resting intermittently with the world stopped turning, is a much loved DJ, Collector, Selector, Fella, and Bard, amongst the fabled Semi Peppered mage club. 

Three years on since he last blessed us with a bounty of phantasmagoric tackle, he’s back once more with a gorgeous hour or so of some of his most sacred Dark Wave, Synth-Pop, Post-Punk & Disco-Not-Disco records & cassettes.

All killer no filler baby!
