The Senate committee examining draft laws to extend the Northern Territory Intervention for another decade has just released its report in Canberra.  When I say just, I mean, like – just.  Really very short time ago.  It was due out yesterday but there’d been a delay and it was going to come out this morning, and it was a delayed a little bit further and finally it’s out.  The Federal Government’s Stronger Futures legislation, which will continue the former Howard Government – Coalition Government’s – Northern Territory Intervention that began in 2007.  That legislation passed the Lower House on the day of the Labor leadership ballot so you may not have noticed it.  But the Intervention expires in August, and if it’s replaced by the Stronger Futures legislation, the Intervention will be extended for another ten years.  And that is what the Senate Committee is examining now.  Nigel Scullion is the Senator for the Northern Territory.  He’s also the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs, and was a member of the Senate Committee and joins us now.  Nigel Scullion, thanks for your time on RN Drive.

Good afternoon.

Now, I haven’t had a chance to look at this report, or even see any reporting on it because it’s only just been tabled.  What’s in it?

NIGEL SCULLION:

Well, basically the report is probably principally three-faceted: it’s got the Government’s, or the Committee report; I have a dissenting report; and the Greens have a dissenting report.  The way it works is basically where the Greens have said fundamentally that there’s a whole range of changes that they’d require, we’ve said there’s some changes that we’d require, and the main report says that this is how it should be, and there’s a whole range of recommendations for potential amendments.
