The Senate Select Committee into the Abbott Government's Budget Cuts will hold an urgent hearing on the Abbott Government’s reckless budget cuts to the ABS and SBS.
Due to the wide-ranging impact that the cuts are expected to have upon Australia’s public broadcasters, as well as the extensive network of content creators and employees that support them, the Senate Select Committee into the Abbott Government’s Budget Cuts will hold a special inquiry into the cuts on December 12 in Canberra.
The inquiry will be the first opportunity to take evidence on the impact of the cuts, the job losses and the reasons behind some of the decisions made by the ABC’s management.
Before the 2013 Federal Election, Tony Abbott told the Australian public that there would be “no cuts to the ABC or SBS”.
Instead, the Abbott Government will cut some $327 million in total from the ABC’s budget, and a further $53 million from SBS. The ABC has already confirmed the cuts will see around 400 staff lose their jobs, a number of offices closed and widespread programming changes made. SBS will be forced to increase the amount of advertising it carries at peak times.
The inquiry will be chaired by Communications Spokesperson, Senator Scott Ludlam.

Senator Scott Ludlam addressed the press at the entrance to the Senate. Says the bill listed for a two year mandatory data retention was a blank cheque for mass surveillance. Says that the Greens have drafted an amendment which would require a warrant to be issued for this amount of data to be captured. Says something strange is going on in the back ground, and is unsure as to whether the Labor Party has had a change of heart. Says data retention has been debated in various forms since 2008. Says that this bill needs to be critiqued and that there should be no blank cheque on this surveillance.
