Social Criticism in Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Lauryn Hill's song 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is an empowerment anthem and a sharp social critique, released in 1998 as part of her acclaimed album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. The song addresses themes of self-respect, sexuality and the dangers of being carried away by appearances and materialism.
In the first verse, Hill speaks directly to women, warning them about the dangers of allowing themselves to be used by men who are only interested in 'that thing'. She criticizes the idea that women must conform to standards of beauty and behavior in order to be accepted or loved, mentioning 'hair weaves like Europeans' and 'fake nails done by Koreans' as examples of how women are pressured to conform to external standards.
