There's a story that goes along with the lyrics.
T'was the morning of the third day of the session. The bassist and guitarist remained in the arms of gentle sleep and I had the kitchen and the arched window - with it's views of the Wye valley (looking resplendent in morning mists) all to myself. Therefore I, armed with pen and workbook, was inspired to write some words.

As I sat writing there came a voice from outside t'was the owner of the barn. I went to see what he wanted. "Is Mr Savage there?" I explained that Mr Savage was still in the arms of Morpheus. "He was asleep the last time I called" he said, in a manner that called into question the reality of said Mr Savage. I explained that we were on holiday and that Mr Savage had been heavily involved with brandy the previous night so that Bacchus and Morpheus at the moment held him fast. The owner retorted that I had said that he'd been drinking the last time he called. I pleaded the holiday defence again. There then followed a conversation not unlike Jahweh's chat with Moses that resulted in Moses stumbling around with a couple of tablets of stone.

Thou shalt keep the external  door closed to keep the barn's heat in.
Thou shalt ensure Mr Savage does not drink too much the night before the morning of departure.
Thou shalt ensure you are out of the cottage by 10:30 a.m. the morning of departure.
Thou shalt not allow the sofa to push the curtains into the window recess.
etcetera,  etcetera, etcetera.

He walked away leaving the impression he felt very peeved that the commandments had been left not with the pheasant plucker but with the pheasant plucker's son.
