With only a few days left until Christmas and one track yet to write for this album, it almost went without saying that I was going to be writing a Christmas song. And as a young parent who’s children have more toys that I have the energy to play with, the exact topic of said Christmas song was also pretty darn clear to me. 

Although it didn’t come through in the actual recording, I definitely imagined myself singing this one with a bit of a country twang as I was writing the lyrics, and I think I know the reason for that. A couple weeks before Christmas, my wife and infant son went on a trip to Mexico with some friends, leaving my toddler and I in frigid Calgary. Since I was still working full time that week, it didn’t make sense for me to drive my son back and forth across town twice a day to bring him to my parents’ place for babysitting, so instead, we just moved in with my parents for a week. While at his grandparents house, the one CD that my son will deign to listen to, apart from his beloved “Daddy ‘Cordings”, is an album by country/folk star Corb Lund. So after listening to this album several times during the week before I wrote this song, I couldn’t help but have some country-ness in my head while I was coming up with the lyrics!
