Створений в кустарних умовах та розповсюджуваний методом з рук-у-руки, похмурий піджанр почав існувати наперекір прилизаному звуку, в бік якого рухались продюсери тієї доби, відкриваючи нові грані DIY естетики. In the early 90s, when the East and West coasts were already aggressively dividing the market between themselves, the city of Memphis, Tennessee, saw the birth of its own local type of hip-hop unlike anything else. Created in artisanal conditions and distributed by the hand-to-hand method, the gloomy subgenre began to exist in opposition to the polished sound that the producers of that time were moving towards, opening new facets of DIY aesthetics. The invited guest of the next episode of Phat in the Flat makes a cut on the iconic representatives of trio flow, muddy samples, and twisted pulses of the 808.
