The music recorded here is taken from a twelfth century manuscript that originated in the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem ( Manuscrit du Saint Sepulcre de Jerusalem XIIe Siècle Chantilly, Musée condé ms. XVIII b 12. ), based on the liturgical practices of the Knights Templar, a non-monastic order founded to protect Jerusalem and the Christians who made pilgrimage there. 

The recording was made in the 900-year-old Abbey of Fontevraud.

vita, dulcedo et spes nostra salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae,
ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia ergo advocata nostra,

Et Iesum benedictum fructum ventris tui,

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,

Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
And after this our exile, show unto us
the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

The alpha and Omega sent from on high 
a glorious solace to the suffering 
when from the highest rank of angels 
the paranymph Gabriel harmoniously declared: 
Hail, Virgin Mary, 
O Clement, O pious, O gentle Mary.

O shepherds, rise before your God, 
relate what you have seen of Christ. 
Let the kings of Tharsis bear witness 
that they saw the star appear:
