SENTIENT PLANET: Tell me about yourself.
» JAMES NASTY: I've been producing music and DJing since college. I've been studying music and playing different musical instruments since I was 10-years-old. I've lived in Baltimore for 20 years. I've traveled all across the country playing Baltimore Club music. I've won multiple awards for my music releases, DJing, and party/event curation. I recently started a hot sauce company, the Jones Falls Sauce Company. Love is my religion. Fuck 12.

SP: Give us some background about the genre you've chosen to focus on in your mix. What do you want listeners to know about this genre and the community it comes from?
» JN: Baltimore Club–or here in town we just call it Club Music–started with DJs blending house music & hip hop together in nightclubs in the 90s here, which eventually became the sound of the city. Club music is the sound of black Baltimore's struggles & triumphs. It's a celebration of what makes Baltimore "The Greatest City in America", like the benches say. It has certain signature drum patterns and break-beat loop samples that make it its own distinct form of dance music that is often imitated and duplicated, without proper credit. It's music that is meant to be danced to; we have a strong community of competitive club dancing here.

SP: What is your connection to this genre?
» JN: I grew up in DC and was always a fan of go-go there. When I moved to Baltimore after high school, I discovered Club music. From growing up in another community with a strong connection to a very specific local genre of music, I found myself quickly immersed in my new community and sound. I started DJing here shortly after college and discovered a connection to Club music in a whole different way, once I saw how people reacted to it on the dance floor. The rest is just me continuing to serve people on the dance floor and help them find a release through the sound of my city.

SP: If people want to hear more of this genre, do you have any recommendations on who they should check out, or where they should go to learn more?
» JN: Other artists to check out include: DJ Blaqstarr, Rod Lee, DJ Technics, KW Griff, Calvo, Mighty Mark, Mike Mumbles, DJ Ayy Mello. Look for any old Club mixes and compilations from DJ K Swift, Diamond K, and Unruly Records. Look for the Baltimore Club Channel on Instagram & YouTube. Finally check out the "Dark City: Beneath the Beat" documentary later in 2019.

SP: Are you working on anything creatively right now that you'd like to tell us more about?
» JN: I'll be releasing an album later this year and holding an event to celebrate a major milestone in my DJ career.

SP: What does the phrase "Sentient Planet" mean to you?
» JN: We as humans are alive. The plants and animals around us are alive. But the planet we exist on is also alive. We are all one connected entity vibrating together. Music is one of the greatest tools given to us to connect us all and uplift us.

SENTIENT PLANET: Tell me about yourself.
» TOYOMANSI: I organize events with food and music in Baltimore. I like the color yellow. I'm interested in working with communities and feeding people.

SP: Give us some background about the genre you've chosen to focus on in your mix. What do you want listeners to know about this genre and the community it comes from?
» TM: I've been digging for hip-hop music in the Philippines for like 5 years now. At one point it was difficult to find a lot of underground Filipino rap music on the internet. I would read forums saying things like "Filipino rap always seems to always be a decade behind." It wasn't until the last three years that I really started hearing more progressive and heavy Tagalog rap. I started hearing people like OWFUCK GANG, Calix and similarobjects. Then there's more groovy genre-blending music like rhxanders, Jess Connelly & LUSTBASS. That's just scratching the surface, it gets really deep. 

SP: What is your connection to this genre?
» TM: Last time I went to Manila, I met up with my Raw Meta Fuego (Raw MF), he got me hip to a lot of amazing Philippine musicians. I also got to meet up with Chef Eazy, OJ River, MNL$, & yung bawal of Bawal Clan. I got to see Peaceful Gemini and DB live, they're killing shit right now. I'm always inspired by the scene in Manila as much as the scene in Baltimore. So many talented artists making there way in a city that might not have a fully established scene. You really have to work hard and make your own lane.

SP: Are you working on anything creatively right now that you'd like to tell us more about?
» TM: Working on a mixtape called "No More Sorries" and my first album. I'm gonna be performing in Los Angeles at the end of August. I'll be popping up cooking stuff here and there. Really just trying to spend the rest of the summer getting inspired so I can get this work during the fall. 

SP: What does the phrase "Sentient Planet" mean to you?
» TM: It makes me think of a large international group that is connected by this intangible thing. Maybe it's the Internet. Maybe it's the BPM.

SENTIENT PLANET: Tell me about yourself.
» ARIEL ZETINA: I'm a DJ and music producer living in Chicago. I'm a resident at the legendary house club Smartbar and I'm also part of Discwoman's roster.

SP: Give us some background about the genre you've chosen to focus on in your mix. What do you want listeners to know about this genre and the community it comes from?
» AZ: This genre is 100% Belizean punta & brukdown. Brukdown is specifically Belizean. I describe it as similar to zydeko but with Caribbean rhythms. It is characterized by the horns and the percussion. Punta comes from Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, but this mix only contains artists from Belize. Punta is that perfect mix of Yucatan & Caribbean rhythms. It is also characterized by horns or synths, similar to Mexican banda, but then with a beat that similar to Caribbean styles like calypso and soca. Lots of these artists make brukdown, punta, soca, and reggae, so the genres definitely bleed into each other. Belize is a country that is right at the intersection of Caribbean and Latinx culture. There is a huge mixture of Latinx, African, & indigenous ancestry in the Belizean population, so it is a nation that really stands at the crossroads of many cultures. 

SP: What is your connection to this genre?
» AZ: My mom emigrated from Belize when she married my white American father, so I was born in North Carolina and then moved to Florida. Almost my entire extended family on my mom's side still lives in Belize and I spent most of my childhood summers there. I was exposed to these genres constantly and I feel like they have a huge connection to the music I create today. 

SP: If people want to hear more of this genre, do you have any recommendations on who they should check out, or where they should go to learn more?
» AZ: For brukdown, the inventor of the genre, Mr. Peters is a great start (aka Wilfred Peters or with his band Mr. Peters Boom & Chime). For punta, Lord Rhaburn. I also highly recommend Andy Palacio, arguably the most famous Belizean musician and his label Garifuna Collective. He is largely credited with putting the music of the Garifuna people on the worldwide map. My favorite Belizean artist is Leela Vernon -- lots of her stuff is only on YouTube but I highly recommend her!

SP: Are you working on anything creatively right now that you'd like to tell us more about?
» AZ: I'm working on an EP set for January 2020! Stay tuned for more info; but I can say one of the tracks is an acid techno track with punta elements. 

SP: What does the phrase "Sentient Planet" mean to you?
» AZ: It is such a beautiful phrase. I have been thinking about how the Earth is like a body, and just like when we get sick, it has the ability to heal itself. Curious if that means going into a massive ice age, but I would like to think the planet is powerful enough to survive what humans have done, even if humans don't.
