"The birth of a music genre is often attributed to a few lucky rebels or musical geniuses who dared challenging the status quo and inspired thousands others in doing so. Lord Shorty’s re-invention of calypso music in the 1970’s was no different, changing the musical landscape forever. With his imposing height of almost 2 meters, Trinidadian born ‘Shorty’ was devoted to (musically) unite the African and Indian cultures, the two major ethnic groups on Trinidad & Tobago. By fusing calypso with Indian rhythms and instruments, or chutney music, he created an exciting new musical hybrid and called it Sokah. As a true Calypsonian, Shorty felt this new sound could well be the answer to Jamaica’s reggae that started overshadowing Trinidad’s calypso at the time. Little did he know that the energetic and syncopated off-beat drum rhythm had far more in store than that.

Sokah, now soca, stands for The Soul of Calypso. It drew its inspiration from many different musical genres such as reggae, latin and zouk which were also airing in Port of Spain and Bridgetown, as well as soul, disco and house ruling in New York, Toronto and London. This influence from different styles and places across the Caribbean, African and Indian diaspora played a big part in soca's growth and success, while popular artists such as Arrow, Machel Montano, Brother Resistance, Lord Nelson and Super Blue helped shape and popularize the genre further in the 80's and 90’s. Even more, it led to soca leaving its mark on new genres such as reggaeton, dancehall, afro house and even EDM. Once you start paying attention, you'll find the soca rhythm along with the steelpan sound everywhere, and rightly so.

Dozens of specific soca styles emerged too. From the early chutney and steelband soca to parang, rapso and many other so-called crossovers. These sub-genres were as much a display of soca’s malleability as it was attesting to its distinctive sound and artistic creativity of its makers. Soon, faster BPM’s started making their entry with Jump & Wave and a whole new generation of artists took the genre to global popularity with smooth R&B flavored groovy soca.

Philadelphia based STUDS Universal Cave flip a pair of arcane tunes into party time dance floor anthems on this double A sider.

Starting off with the uptempo stomper "So Soft So Sweet," the big sing-along hook, searing synth solo, and reinforced drums make this a perfect secret weapon for your next disco set.

On the flip, "Mishugina Mambo" offers up a heavy duty Latin rhythm workout. Inspired by the classic Sofrito Specials series, the hypnotic guitar and roaring horns soar over driving percussion and pulsing drums that dare everyone in the room to remain still.

Universal Cave began it's journey in 2009, and currently Shawn Ryan, Brian Cassidy, and Alex Tebbs Mitchell are at the helm. Known for their namesake record label and their Soft Rock For Hard times label and mix series,  they have also released edits and remixes on Emotional Rescue, Pleasure of Love, and now STUDS. Their commitment to playing top shelf sounds of the past, present, and future in their DJ sets also shines through in their many mixes, including their contributions to Beats in Space, Dream Chimney Mix of The Week, Bar Part Time, Tuff Shed on NTS and Running Hot Radio.

For the inaugural edition, we've invited DJ, producer, crate digger pur sang and dear friend MLiR. He delivered a mix that plays like a mirage: humid, pulsing, and slightly out of reach. Dusty rhythms rise like heat from sunbaked earth, synths shimmer like moonlight on black water, and low-slung basslines guide us through jungle clearings.

Nothing here is rushed. Tempos stretch and sway. Each track is a step deeper into the unknown, stitched together with a gentle hand and an ear tuned to atmosphere over genre. Synth pop melts into dream-state house, lo-fi textures wash against crystalline grooves, and the edges blur—until all that’s left is feeling.

This is what it means to go Off Course: no algorithms, no directions, just intuition—and a desire to get beautifully lost.

1995 found the three Bruce brothers on holiday in Es Mal Pas. Their hotel patrona came with a message that there was a phone call for ‘los tres moretones’... Some confusion ensued; ‘the three bruises’? Finally, the penny dropped.

The 10th vinyl release on Tokyo/HK-based label Palms & Charms comes from three brothers; label founders Barnaby and Samuel Bruce (AKA Canebrake), joined by brother Max Bruce (AKA Max Essa). All three brothers have been making music for decades, but somehow this is the first time they’ve written and produced original music as a trio.

Side A of the 7” features the original version of A Lo Hecho, Pecho; a chugging, percussive celebration, with a joyous horn line. On Side B, the El Triángulo Remix, courtesy of Quinn Lamont Luke, builds beautifully from hushed synth-pads-at-dawn, through bubbling percussion, to dubbed out trumpet-from-beyond.

Finally, the digital release comes with a bonus remix: the Dominic Dawson Dub Flex. Mr Dawson works his dub magic, to create an immense dubby chugger of epic proportions. A Lo Hecho, Pecho; stick out your chest when faced with adversity; in other words, don’t cry over spilt milk :-)
