King of Cats - the project of Brighton-cum-Oxford songwriter Max Levy - will release a debut album, 'Working Out', on 29th September through Art Reeks, the collaborative label by Art Is Hard and Reeks of Effort Records - pre order is available from https://artreeks.bandcamp.com now.

Recorded by Johnathan Coddington in a big room with crystals, 'Working Out' is influenced variously by Internet radio, indeterminacy, Reeks of Effort (bands and people), the ability to buy guns from the internet, the muscular form and the village of Eynsham. It is a complex, frustrated and often very funny record. Lyrical and sonic comparisons can be made to Stephin Merrit, Scout Niblett, Alisdair Roberts or Frankie Cosmos and elements of the D.I.Y indiepop and punk scenes King of Cats inhabits often shine through. But the sound and personality of “Working Out” lacks a derivative quality, partly due to Max’s totally distinctive, powerful singing voice.
 
While not a wholly conceptual record, “Working Out” does centre on a few things which have been present in Max’s writing of late. “Most of the songs have something to do with the fear of being trapped in a feeble body, dreams of a muscular form and the relationship between one’s environment, one’s body and one’s being an idiot. I don’t work out a lot, but I think about it often”. Friction between ideas of bodily perfection and emotional satisfaction is something that he was trying to understand in the years writing these songs. “I didn’t get very far”.
 
Taken from the album, 'Dead Lamb' is streaming online now with Levy and bandmates Owen Williams (Joanna Gruesome, Grubs) and Adam Cave playing a number of live dates in the UK through September.

It’s very easy to throw superlatives at something you admire, but when it comes to something you love, that’s when things get pretty tricky. Although that’s possibly the cheesiest opening line I’ve ever written for a release announcement, I wouldn’t be saying it if I was able to cohesively string together some thoughts on how good I think gims by flout is.

Due for release 18.5.15 on ltd edition green glittery cassette, gims is a collection of songs by the New York based John DeRosso (aka flout). Gradually appearing on his Bandcamp page over the space of 2 months, the album is made up of a collection of yearning, softly sung bedroom pop songs “about being an adult, and coming to terms with a realized faulty version of yourself”.

Although it seems lazy to draw comparisions to other bedroom pop heroes (Alex G, R.L. Kelly, Gorgeous Bully) the elements that made all of the aforementioned so endearing and excellent are present here. The sound of someone finding their feet whilst making understated pop songs complete with all the perfect imperfections that come with recording at home. As John says himself “I wouldn’t change a thing about it. The constant clearing of my throat, my cat meowing after track 1, the footsteps of my roommates on the hardwood floors present on many tracks, the shouts of seamen on the titanic attempting to avoid an iceberg at the end of track 7, and all of those other “blemishes” encapsulate the cathartic days and nights recording this fledgling body of work.”

The short running time (11 tracks in just under 22 minutes) leaves you yearning for more and I’ve lost count of the amount of times, I’ve quickly stuck the album on whilst walking somewhere or waiting for something to happen. It somehow achieves the accolade of being one of our most fragile releases but also one of our most self assured and I’m extremely happy to be releasing it.
