Phortah shares again his unique, rich and emotive sound, this time on Earthly Measures. Sadaken exhibits further refinement of his familiar melancholic tonality blended with subtle, textural atmospheric elements. These five tracks are pulsing grooves that get heads bopping and hips writhing, in a very unique & intimate way.

Phortah’s vocal improvisations are being cultivated and appears across Sadaken. Phortah says of its effects "it creates that not-quite-human sound which connects with where I feel a lot of us are at: super digitised organisms, yearning for a way back to our earthly nature”.

That image captures Phortah’s sound and journey well: a repressed, visceral, animal nature reemerging to reclaim its place in an increasingly abstract, digital, binary, landscape.

Welcome to the Overtone edition of INI's 13 Mooncycle Mix.

The idea of the 13 Mooncycle Mix is based on the natural time phenomenon. Within the system of natural time, it takes the moon 28 days to orbit the Earth; it makes this orbit 13 times each year. Each of the 13 moons possess unique characteristics, the purpose of then of the 13 Mooncycle Mix is to use each moon as an inspiration. Come each 28th day, INI invites an artist to curate a mix for the new moon, giving them total creative freedom to interpret, signal or share whatever they so desire to as a homage to uniqueness of each moon.

Here we go! You are now about to be plunged into a musical abyss. We caution you to buckle up for this sonic experience, but frankly speaking, all you need to do is open up. Open up to the sounds and ideas being expressed. Let it all in.

A new moon is on the horizon. This 5th moon, representing overtone, led us to call upon none other than the sunshine duo, Umoja. We left the duo to their own device; the result is nothing short of an esoteric musical voyage. 

Inspired by the elegance and sense of resurrection embodied by the peacock (this moon’s totem animal), Umoja picked out wondrous sounds from various sources. By blending ethnic ritual jams, soothing exotica delights, juxtaposing percussions, synthesized sound waves, channelling bioacoustics, inspiring vocals and ambient soundscapes, the resulting music plunges the listener into a deep state of trance. In this state of trance, the listener is empowered to take command of the rejuvenation of their soul and to radiate the warm glow of a new being; triumphing light over darkness.

Building on the works of Piero Umiliani, Martin Danny, Henri Mancini, Alice Coltrane, Duo Orou Negro and The Tropicals among many others, Umoja has been able to synthesize these diverse sounds into a 58-minute awe inspiring tale.

In the end, when the disorienting effects of the trance have worn off and the soul is resurrected, do join Umoja in radiating the divine truth of light over darkness.

Efficient Space is honoured to share the little-heard recordings of three Yolngu songmen from Northeast Arnhem Land - Bobby Bunnungurr, Jimmy Djamunba and Peter Milaynga (d. 2007) - working in collaboration with Victorian musician Peter Mumme. Yolngu are the indigenous peoples of Arnhem Land in Northern Territory, Australia; their clans are the Marangu and Malabirr, the languages Djinang and Gannalbingu. Their songs are of instruction, story and ceremony.

A connection first initiated by Yolngu actor David Gulpilil, Waak Waak Djungi’s mid-90s recordings were preceded by years of respectful sharing of culture. Mumme explains that “the aim was to produce something that is new, not in the sense of a breakthrough, but what emerges from the combining of existing ideas”. What developed was sonically unique - sprawling vocal/electronic soundscapes and field recordings that reimagine the traditional songs of black crows and white cockatoos, sharing, creation spirits and of leaving and returning home to country. Spacious and patiently durational, the songs resound in a big land with a big story to tell.

On the 1997 Waak Waak Djungi album Crow Fire Music, these interpretations were assembled with traditional recordings and additional material from Sebastian Jörgensen and Sally Grice. Falling short of generating public interest, it became well known in the Yolngu homeland. Nearly two decades later, a CD copy filed away in the 3RRR FM library would prompt a three year investigation to meet the people behind the music.

Waak Waak ga Min Min (Black Crow, White Cockatoo) combines the previously unreleased Gandi Bawong with five contemporary versions from the original album, with a new cover painting by Bobby Bunnungurr. Tracing 1997 back to many millennia ago, this is a captivating window into the richness of Aboriginal culture and collaboration.

Using a range of methods, my work investigates the social and musical practices of musicians online and offline to understand the connections between social media and how electronic producers, and in particular beat makers, learn how to express themselves musically as both individuals and as part of a wide scene.
