Mama, the first single from this album, speaks to the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship, with all its sweetness and its woes. There are two different timelines that the song sprung from, both written in the small town in Northern california where I grew up: the first verse was written in 2019 during a house-sitting gig with lots of land and space to ponder, and the second verse was written during the spring of 2023 while staying in a friend’s trailer at Laguna Farm in the same town. It felt as if I went back home to retrieve the rest of the song years later, like we had unfinished business. These are two very different eras in my relationship with my mother as well. There is a tone at first in the song filled with hope for her life after I left the nest, and the latter verse reflecting on some of our hardships, making sense of our past and our home once the dust settled after great change. Everything in between acknowledges the uniqueness of our bond: the sweetness, the quirks, and the details fill her in on the home I’ve carved out for myself now, shifting from an “our” to an “I” as I lean into adulthood.

The song evokes an embodied emotion, and I’m so grateful for all the accompaniment I had during the recording process; including a mournful slide guitar by Eric Van Thyme and soft drums by Omar Akrouche of Worthitpurchase, all mixed and produced by loving friend Mac of Sarah Once Was. It feels melodic with blues, and the honesty of a daughter with mother as muse.
