Scruggs & Sonny Jim had ridden long since dealing the final blow to the plantoid behemoth that had first impeded their journey some many months ago. They had left that beast’s lair far behind, and happily so for the stench of commingled acrid sap and gunpowder that filled it once the pair had finished. Astonished by the wonders of this alien land, their journey had lead them through biomes never before seen, in which red rock sandstone bore forth soaring forests filled with idyllic glens and treacherous thickets alike. Through these, they had climbed in an ascent to a high plateau, and it was at this peak that the pair saw a sight unrivaled by any in their journey thus far.

Rising above the forest that continued onwards below was a great stone structure of peaks and turrets, connected by a network of bridges that hung precariously over the ravines and canyons of the mountainside upon which it was built. The building’s spires rose to a height of such impractical grandiosity that the pair wondered what the purpose of such a structure could be or, more than likely, could have been. For all of the stature that it had certainly once commanded, the building was a shell of its former self, a relic of unique hubris worn bare by the selfsame forces that allowed the forest beneath it to thrive. No light shone from its windows and no figures stood atop its balconies, for whatever cataclysm had befallen its creators had driven them from this place long ago. All of these thoughts passed through Scrugg’s mind as he gazed upwards, and to synthesize them he asked a single question of his partner, Sonny Jim.

“Hey, Sonny Jim,”
“Yeah Scruggs?”
“Why the hell would you bother hauling rocks all the way up there?”

With nothing but a grunt and a shrug in response, Sonny Jim spurred his horse onwards, and the two resumed their journey, riding into the shadow cast by the great castle that lay above.

BURR OAK drive the EATBRAIN horde into the shadowed depths of their latest EP, DARK AGE, the latest from the duo, and a follow up to their previous releases Roots of Evil & Hawkeye on the label. Within, the duo unleashes six tracks stacked with aggressive tonalities and futuristic textures that unveil the latest in the sonic tale of these twin bassline masterminds.

Fresh from his success with the ‘Bassline Thumpin’ EP, Harley D is back on the Serial Killaz label for another fresh instalment of future jungle. The selection on the ‘Bud Business’ EP is nothing short of mind blowing so strap in, hold tight and watch the ride.

‘The Jungle’ comes straight in with full on blockbuster movie vibes. Atmospheric overload right from the tap of the start button to the point where Harley D really pulls out all the stops to fully embrace your ears. A combination of classic hardcore breaks, distorted drawn out lead bass notes and a ton of vocal stabs to really make you feel like you have either lost the plot or are actually stuck inna jungle.

Title track ‘Bud Business’ flexes out a calmer tone, introducing Harley’s swing step into the mix alongside ragga vocals and smoothed out pads. It’s a versatile beast this one, aimed at the dancefloor under a heavy haze of weed smoke and green lazers. ‘Bad’ brings forth that ever present Purge drone alongside a modulating low end sine wave that's bound to cause every single window in your street to vibrate. Cheeky vocal stabs and chord pads create tension in the mix.

‘You Feel’ may well remind you a little of ‘Hyperspace’ depending on how you’re listening to it. Stuck in a mind vortex? If not, you may well be after this one. 2 step breaks, dreamy female vox and layers of bass take you on a sonic trip from the off. Rewind and come again! Sliding into the outro with ‘Check This’ which sets precedent for future Serial Killaz outings with a tough as nails lead bassline that rips through speaker boxes like a chainsaw and then some. Like dubstep at 175? This one you.

You can imagine how we felt loading up this EP from newcomer Shayper, donning our futuristic space suits and throwing all kinds of mental shapes around the studio. What you’re getting here with the ‘Take a Stand’ EP is 4 tracks made in the future so strap in and embrace the ride.

‘Never Forgotten’ is like a bullet train on acid with its crushing breakbeat slices, pitched up female vocals and a kick drum that wallops so hard it should come with some kind of health warning. Mix that with an instrumental interlude that oozes sonic excellence, providing that essential breathing space before going in all over again.

Talking of which, up next is ‘Breathe’, a certified corner creeper and no doubt one to get lost in. It’s a murky little number that will have your heels sinking into the carpet in true nightmare fashion; easy to get sucked in, hard to get out. Flipping the script a full 360 degrees with ‘Sunsets’ where Shayper demonstrates his softer side, blending 80’s synth pads with soft vocals before adding a touch of spice to the bassline melody. Quirky and outside of the box, just what we like.

Ending on a high with ‘Free’ and it’s glossy piano tinkering, shuffling breaks and devastating highs and lows. A bit like the last 12 months really with it’s many ups and downs, twists and turns. A top quality end to the EP and certainly a track that was put in last place to make you sit up and think...maybe I should take notice of finishing tracks a bit more. Banger.
