Sometime during the waning days of 2008, in a dusty Williamsburg basement, beneath the haze of a burgeoning financial crisis, ripe with youthful energy and drunk on hope, Miniboone began the endless search for satisfaction that is the life of a rock band. That search has led them to their second LP, "Bad Sports," a chronicle of looking for joy and failing, only to find that joy hiding within the soulcrushing hunt itself.

In their search, Miniboone has shared stages with acts as diverse and acclaimed as the B-52s, Art Brut, and Real Estate, and brought their kinetic, unabashedly-delivered power pop to audiences at festivals such as Bonnaroo, SXSW, CMJ and more. They've produced an LP (2013's "Miniboone"), as well as numerous EPs and singles, which have received praised from likes of the Village Voice, NPR, the L Magazine and Vice.

To record their second LP, Miniboone (Tony Aquilino - bass, Craig Barnes - guitar / keys, Drew St. Aubin - drums, and Doug Schrashun - guitar) retreated from the skyrocketing rents of New York's inwardly advancing but still outer boroughs and decamped to an historic and reputedly haunted upstate manor with producer Travis Harrison (Built to Spill, Homosexuals, Dope Body). What they emerged with is an album that uses the thunder, fury, and layered vocal harmonies of classic rock's latter day gods to draw attention to the absurdity of rock in 2015. "Bad Sports" is the frantic chord changes and bilious sneer of vintage Elvis Costello beat over the head by the techno-beauty and IRL-disappointment of the 21st century, the booming right foot of John Bonham and the precisely twirled microphone of Roger Daltrey combining forces to smash a perfectly good smart phone.

ROCKETSHIP PARK: It's Not You (Revue Rehearsal 01.21.12)

Here's the record that started it all. This seven-song blast of ultra-distilled American-styled rock and roll features a riff-happy experimental bar-band fronted by one shoutin' drunkard. You'll hear weird chords and dirty, bouncy, driving beats. The songs are about Dylanology, giving up on rock and roll and not doing what you want but doing what you should.

The year was 2003. It was getting cold outside. We never forgot that because the tiny one room rehearsal shack we'd rented from a friend in Long Island City didn't really have heat. We had it all set up to record in there and we'd get together a couple times a week, never without warm coats or cold Bud tall boys, to make music. Thankfully Joe Willie was on the mic for the first time and we loved it. Since mid '95 he'd been writing lyrics for our several underachieving backyard rock partnerships, all of which Dave and I loudly and proudly rocked for. His words, always honest and poetic, had taken on a new urgency, especially since what it seemed like he was writing about, in some way, was our lives as underachieving rock-band-dudes. Somehow he endowed our continuing musical pursuits with dignity and purpose, and we were genuinely fired up about it. We'd been dosing ourselves with very inspiring sounds, specifically Richard Hell's Blank Generation, lots of Mitch Ryder, Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club, all the bands in Michael Azzerrad's Our Band Could Be Your Life. During this period we all lived in Joe's house in Hoboken at the same time and we played our very first shows.-Travis

"The material on the Unsacred Hearts' debut EP follows the time honoured tradition of rock songs about rock. That always comes with the potential of sounding silly (we all have nightmares about bad hair metal where the main subject was "RAWK!") but as this is a fairly charming and skilled band their subject matter is delivered with a good deal of reverence and conviction.

The band shows off a number of influences over these 7 songs. At the core this has the feel of early New York City punk rock, but the band dips into moments of folk, blues and soul, 60s mod and even a bit of outlaw country before the record's run it's course. "Stuck Inside A Mobile Home With The Mansion Blues Again" is an infectious amalgam of post-punk dissonance, garage rock and folky storytelling. It sounds fresh and original yet it's deeply rooted in the band's influences. The song's about an old busker claiming that Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" is the only Dylan song in which the title doesn't appear in the lyrics (it's not). Weird subject matter for a rock song? Sure, but the Unsacred Hearts make it sound damn important nonetheless. "1978" is a tribute to the NYC punk scene of that year, one that the band admits they were "born too late" to witness. They wax nostalgic for the time of Johnny Thunders and berate the current trends in punk rock (the line "I don't want your diary stuck in a fucking song" makes me smile). "We Were A Band" is another high point, showing off well integrated country influences in a tune that you'll be singing for hours afterwards.

I'm really excited about this band; there's less than 15 minutes of material on this disc yet I could easily keep talking about it. The lead track "I Was Raised To Be Polite & Kind" is barely a minute and a half long and it ends with a guitar solo that feels classic for lack of a better term. It's the ultimate tease and leaves you in such anticipation for what's to come. The same can be said about this EP."

For all the paranoia, regret and self-doubt that Kevin Fish sings about across the thirteen flawlessly crafted songs on the new Higgins album Straight A’s, for all the talk of lies, guilt and confusion, never once does he submit to resignation. For Fish, failure is surely an option but that doesn’t mean it’s OK. When he tells his love in “Build It Up,” “don’t give up / we’re only here to build stuff” you believe him, especially considering the temple of musical beauty those words sit within. Along with his longtime drum-wizard and partner-in-rock Brian Kantor as well as a cast of collaborators including multi-instrumentalist / string arranger Josh Kaufman, bassist Billy Filo, co-producer and recordist Travis Harrison and Marshmallow Coast’s Andy Gonzales amongst others, Fish guides us on an ambitious and deeply soulful journey through his musical heart, a place paved with pop, sweet grooving melody and chords upon chords.

Never before has Fish sang as softly and as affecting as on “Do You Still?,” perhaps the most exquisite diamond of a pop song he’s ever written. That’s saying a lot since this record collects several glimmering pop jewels; the pristine jangle of “Slap or Pinch,” the Pet Sounds majesty of "Never Here," and the only non-Fish composition, Josh Kaufman’s elegant minor-key “When I See Her” which suggests Orbisonian dramatics through the prisms of electric guitar and early-Lennon classicism. Hooks are the king of this classroom. However, while memorable melody is ubiquitous, much of this record’s musical heart beats at slower pace, and compositions like “Lie,” “Never Here,” and the stunning closer “Sing” breathe deeply, unfolding with a stately elegance and assured maturity.

It’s been four years since the last Higgins record Zs, and for all that platter’s magnetic classic-rock inertia, it is here that this band’s fully mature voice has arrived. It seems they’ve graduated, if you will, with straight A’s of course, to stand toe-to-toe with the big boys.  Yet, for all the record’s laser thematic focus, it never gets bogged down in any dogma, never loses its sense of fun, joy or good humour. Higgins shows, without any snark or irony, that it is cool to work hard and to try your best. Consider Straight A’s your Cliff’s Notes for life.

Since their first appearance in 2008, Miniboone have shared stages with acts as diverse and acclaimed as the B-52s, Art Brut, and Real Estate, and brought their witches' brew of caffeinated, unabashedly-delivered power pop to audiences at festivals such as Bonnaroo, South By Southwest, CMJ and NXNE.

After two EPs and one 7" comes the first full-length, covering the fertile crescent of stylistic ground between Squeezey brain-pop and Queeny big-sounds while, if you listen close enough, telling the classic story of friends trying to find their place in a rapidly changing urban environment that wants nothing more than to co-opt them, confuse them into adulthood, jerk them around from desk job to spineless desk job, and scare them straight with tales of unfulfilled dreams and missed chances. They recorded the album over the course of a year at Serious Business studios in Manhattan with producer Travis Harrison (Lifeguards, Homosexuals) and the result is equal parts proto-punk rave up ("The Superposition of Human Affection"), harmony basted slow burn ("Magic Eye"), and Hall-and-Oates-spectrum smooth-rock ("Baby, I Hope So").
