Quasi (ébauche) performed by the Arditti String Quartet at the Norhwestern University New Music Conference, NUNC 4. 

In Quasi (ébauche) the original formative ideas are constantly recalled in a series of reconstructions of the past in constantly present contexts, having at times more fidelity—and at times growing less similar—to the original experience. These reconstructions, by means of pitch gene recombinations, leave only memory vestiges of the original by constantly shifting, diffusing, distorting, transforming, omitting or adding events according to a model of retention/corruption.

It is, in other words, like drawing “on the elements and gist of the past, and extract, recombine and reassemble them into imaginary events that never occurred in that exact form,…not to preserve the past but to adapt it so as to enrich and manipulate the present.’’ It is all about what is remembered and how it is remembered…

Akasha (आकाश) is a music of invisibility, electricity and the open expanse of the sky. The title is the Sanskrit word for the æther, a concept once understood as an unseen force present in all things in motion in the world.

Akasha was written for the JACK Quartet who gave the premiere on 6 February 2016 in Paine Hall on the campus of Harvard University.

This performance is the JACK Quartet playing the dress rehearsal the day of the premiere.

In the late 1960s, Iannis Xenakis started his research on stochastic synthesis: a microscopic approach to sound synthesis that uses probability distributions to manipulate individual digital samples, as if they were indivisible elementary particles. My piece explores Xenakis's Dynamic Stochastic Synthesis and an extension of this technique that I am currently developing: the Stochastic Concatenation of Dynamic Stochastic Synthesis.

The structure of the piece is articulated by juxtaposing different families of sounds, highlighting the micro- and macro-levels of musical sound. Some of the cuts happen between similar sounds, to give the impression of movement or progress; the rest occur between very contrasting sounds.

Fulya Uçanok​ and ​Serkan Sevilgen​ started a project under the umbrella of their initiative Soundinit to focus on microscopic details of sound objects, breadcrumb-like patterns, and the place as a first-class instrument. They find their roots and inspirations in early electroacoustic music, musique concrète tradition, deep listening experiences, chance operations, free improvisation, and minimalism in the use of material with the emphasis of temporal nature of music, importance, and ambiguity of silence. The performance aims to combine the merits of “music” (in a concert hall) and “sound art” (in an art gallery). The audience will have enough time to consume and enjoy the music as time-dependent art which does not necessarily have a distinct start, progression, and end but the performance will be short comparing to a sound installation with the presence of artists experiencing the same sonic atmosphere with the audience and creating sound events real-time.

This is, believe it or not, a variation on Mozart's musical dice game of 1787, only composed by random numbers of repetitions of each bar on six separate tracks as in Terry Riley's "In C", plus on top of that I have applied a diatonic 7th chord harmony with random (but directed) root progressions and random modulations generated using the new Scale class in my CsoundAC library for algorithmic composition using Csound. All sounds are synthesized by Csound. The music theory behind the software was inspired by Dmitri Tymoczko and elaborated by myself.
