To accompany Serpentine's 2022 Radio Ballads exhibition, we commissioned sound objects that could hold and share the project's collaborative processes, communicate care through sound, and invite listeners into the emotional world of Radio Ballads.

Referencing the methods used in the original BBC Radio Ballads, audio producer Nada Smiljanic made eight sound objects by stitching, layering and weaving together sound and music that had been captured by the Radio Ballads team throughout three years of collaborations, conversations and performances. 

These creative tracks are permanently available on Serpentine’s free Bloomberg Connects app, alongside an introduction from the Civic team and an interview between Amal Khalaf, Civic Curator, Serpentine, and Marijke Steedman, founder of New Town Culture.

In this walk, written by Valeria Luiselli, a child accompanies the visitor, taking them on a journey in an imaginary future in which the Galleries are but a distant memory.

Valeria Luiselli, born in Mexico City and now settled in New York, is the author of the book of essays Sidewalks (2013) and the widely acclaimed novel Faces in the Crowd (2012). Luiselli has collaborated in numerous multidisciplinary projects, including a ballet libretto and a novella. Her short fiction and non-fiction has appeared in The New York Times, Granta, Brick, McSweeneys and Dazed and Confused, among others. She has previously lived in Costa Rica, South Korea, South Africa, India and Spain.

Nigerian-born, award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writes novels, short stories, essays and poem. Her fiction works include Americanah (2013), Half of a Yellow Sun (winner of the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction 2007), Purple Hibiscus (winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize 2005 and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award 2004) and The Thing Around Your Neck, a collection of short stories shortlisted for the 2010 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book in Africa. The recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, Adichie was named in 2012 one of the The New Yorker’s ‘20 under 40’ list of writers to watch. She divides her time between Nigeria and America. Poet and critic Quinn Latimer wrote a free, downloadable audio introduction for the Marisa Merz exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery. Read by actress and writer Eleanor Bron, this audio piece addresses the visitor through a series of letters, reflecting upon the exhibition in the context of Merz’s life and wider work. This audio introduction was designed to be enjoyed in the exhibition or at home.

Quinn Latimer is a California-born poet and critic based in Basel, Switzerland. She is the author of Rumored Animals (2012), which was awarded the 2010 American Poetry Journal Book Prize, and Describe This Distance (2013), which explores the work of Sarah Lucas, as well as shame, palindromes, passivity, fertility statuary, Mexico, Napoleon, Artaud, Samuel Beckett, Susan Sontag, and Mary Wollstonecraft. A regular contributor to Artforum and Frieze, she has also written for Art in America, Bookforum, East of Borneo, and Mousse. Her essays frequently appear in museum catalogues and critical anthologies. She was awarded a 2012 Arts Writing Grant from the Creative Capitol/Warhol Foundation. Bedwyr Williams (born 1974) lives and works in Caernarfon, North Wales. In 2013 he represented Wales at the Venice Biennale with a large-scale installation titled The Starry Messenger. Recent solo exhibitions include ECHT, Tramway, Glasgow (part of Glasgow International) and Salzburger Kunstverein, Austria. Group exhibitions include Primal Architecture, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2014) and Ernste Tiere, Bonner Kunstverein (2011).

Victoria Sin is a London based artist concerned with the experience of the physical within the social body. Their work explores desire, identification and objectification within systems of looking and reification of ideal images within technologies of representation. They work across performance, moving image, writing, installation, and print, and use drag as a tool to challenge expectations and attitudes on femme identities and how images and iconography of femininity are produced, inscribed, and performed. Their long-term project, Dream Babes, explores speculative fiction as a productive strategy of queer resistance, invading existing narratives around naturalised states of sex, gender and race, imaging futurity that does not depend on existing historical and social infrastructure.

Hito Steyerl’s films, installations and writings come out of a systemic way of thinking and working, in which artistic production and the theoretical analysis of global social issues are closely linked. Steyerl investigates the interaction and synthesis of technological and artistic imagery, for example, at the level of visual mass culture—and its function within the overall dispositif of technocracy, monetary policy, the abuse of power, and violence.

Through performance, video, painting and textiles, Zadie Xa interrogates the conflation of cultures that inform self conceptualised identities, notions of self and her own experience within the Asian diaspora. Her intricate hand-sewn fabric work stitches together yin-yangs, knives, lucky numbers and monolid eyes. These familiar motifs operate within a system of personalised semiotics, aspiring to create new and alternative Asian identity narratives that are often fantastical and within the realm of the supernatural. She received an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2014 and a BFA at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2007.

NAKED are Agnes Gryczkowska and Alexander Johnston, a London-based duo whose work engages with noise, industrial, experimental and extreme forms of electronic music.

Their new EP for Halcyon Veil — 'Total Power Exchange' — is a distorted and violent noise transgression, rooted in socio-political confrontation. It’s made from the sounds of sex, vomit, noise, relentless forward movement and Salò-birthed vocals to create a spine-crushing noise hybrid in the face of systematic oppression. It speaks of power - who holds it and who seeks to reclaim it, and of alternating states of control. All read via the prism of current politics, societal restraints and the capitalistic manipulation and understanding of the body. Total Power Exchange speaks of releasing one’s own mind and body from the controlling mechanisms that have been imposed on them.

This year has seen NAKED release two new music videos and an alternative national anthem for DAZED which followed the release of their debut album Zone and a collaboration with Mykki Blanco.

Shumon Basar is a writer, curator and cultural critic. Fatima Al Qadiri is a Kuwaiti music producer and artist based in Berlin.
