After seven albums and almost two decades of blessing us discerning musical folk with the very best in disco and house that the UK has to offer, the stars have aligned and Crazy P has collided with Classic in the outer hemispheres of sonic glory. ‘Truelight EP’ demonstrates fully the unique and superior disco/house hybrid sound that has carved Crazy P’s legend into the bedrock of both those beloved genres. 

‘One True Light’ provides cosmic clusters of subtle beats that sparkle and shimmer, with plenty of that well-versed groove that seems so effortless to the Crazy P crew. ‘In My Hands’ follows some darker twists with a haunting crunching bassline and organ stabs. Topping it all off are remixes of both tracks, one by Crazy P member Hot Toddy aka Chris Todd, drawing on that memorable snaking bottom line and amping up the production with echoes of Donna Summer seduction. Keeping it firmly within the camp, co-founder Ron Basejam remixes ‘One True Light’, taking the tempo down to create lush, psychedelic soundscapes. Malcolm Mitchell’s Global Warming Records is a self-proclaimed outlet for “discoholics” and multi-cultural geeks. The three projects they’ve released are a collection of songs emanating a cosmic, often tribal, synth heavy analog disco sound. The latest release from Marseille based producer Fred Berthet (aka. DJ STEEF), an old time friend of the label and major artist of the downtempo scene in the South of France, fits a similar mold. The EP, similar to its artwork, is filled with a slow, sexual tension heightened by slow, driving rhythms and hypnotic acid bass lines.

Included in the EP is a remix from Italian balearic duo, Mushrooms Project (Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano), who have crafted a superbly organic and deeply drugged out mid tempo burner that seems to call on numerous Ibiza sunrises for inspiration. Freaky, mesmerizing synth work take the listener on a trip to acid islands where steady bass permeates through thick fog over glistening percussive sequences. Its driving rhythms make the track feel faster than it is. This is a much appreciated form of trickery in down-tempo productions. Slow burners that make you dance hard are not easy to make.

Having established a handful of renowned imprints such as Rekids, Pyramids Of Mars, Cabin Fever and The Double R, Matt Edwards’ new venture aims to shine a light on classic tracks that didn’t always get the recognition they deserve.

“Amoon [Sir Lord Comixx] and I go back a long way and we met through our friend Justin [Isonoe] in the early 90s,” says Matt Edwards. “I was still living in Catford and would regularly drive over to Justin’s studio where he'd play me all this crazy, otherworldly music from Amoon and it blew my mind - I was completely captivated by his unique take on techno.”

“At the time I had no idea that we grew up in the same neighbourhood and Amoon was living just around the corner so, of course, we hooked up and in 1996 I released an EP from him including one of his classics ‘UR My Omen’ on my Hard Up label.”

Composed of four tracks from separate releases, ‘Retroactive (Part One)’ inaugurates with ‘1 4 The Groove’ from Sir Lord Comixx’s ‘Danceteria EP’ on Ugly Music. Produced in ’96, the track’s raw aesthetic features sharp percussion, heady melodies and a compelling groove. Meanwhile, ‘Enemax’ – which appeared on 1A Records - demonstrates throbbing synths and shuffling drums.

Originally produced under his a.Moon moniker in ‘98, ‘Funk Box’ is the most robust track on the package with its thudding kicks and assortment of meandering sounds, before the ‘Azid Jazz’ provides a deep and funky finale.
