I am so grateful to you & your father for recording this and  sharing it. I grew up close to Thornton beach, just south of San Francisco, and the sounds of foghorns would lull me to sleep. It’s lovely to be transported back to those years. Thank you!

I love this recording for background when working.  Only lived in SF for a few years but I love it and this always brings back memories for me.

I absolutely adore this.  I lived in the Richmond District in the 1970s ... was a teenager then.  This was what I heard every night.   As I listen to these sounds, I can almost smell the fog and feel that lovely sense of quiet isolation and connection with the ocean and the air.   Thank you so much.

Apiento Boiler Room Ibiza DJ Set

In the late '80s, my dad recorded the foghorns of San Francisco on tape for my mother.  Many of the foghorns in San Francisco Bay can never be heard again as they have been replaced by more advanced technology. (Please read on)

Here is what my dad has to say:

This recording was made late in the evening on the foggy night of August 29th, 1987 from 
Lands End near Lincoln Park in San Francisco, using fairly inexpensive stereo equipment. The coordinates are approximately N 37 degrees 47' 14"; W 122 degrees 29' 40.5".  Years later I converted the recording to digital for posterity.  There are four separate fog horns audible, each with specific characteristics such as direction, intervals and frequencies; two are single, two are double.  I believe two of these are located on the nearby Golden Gate Bridge itself and another may be at Point Bonita on the Marin Headlands, 2.5 miles west of the bridge. Also audible is the surf below the cliffs of Lands End. At about 1:08:00

Solid Steel (5th August) This week it's Rival Consoles and Ben Lukas Boysen for an Erased Tapes takeover, the London based label set up by Robert Raths in 2007 that also includes Nils Frahm, Kiasmos, Peter Broderick and Dawn of Midi in their roster. First up in Hour 1, it's London-based electronic songwriter Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles celebrating the release his most personal work to date in the form of a mini-album titled ‘Night Melody’ which is out on 5th August. He told us;
"The mix is a collection of sonic palettes which inspire me to make music. From Todd Terje's playful, colourful remix, to The Cyclist's Lodi distorted broken synth grooves, Cortinis epic moving ambient masterpiece 'scapula', Gold Panda's childlike beauty: all of these tracks contain things that excite me. So rather than this being a very consistent strict tempo mix it is a collection of varying ideas and approaches to electronics."

"It’s an honour to be able to do an Electronic Explorations mix, Rob Booth, the founder, is one of the most influential and nicest heads in the electronic music world, so the pressure was on for me to deliver! I am not a DJ in the traditional sense of using tech for beat matching and using pitch controls although I love to hear all that, instead I have mixed all these tracks purely by ear, a bit like I play the piano, which is never to a metronome and just by feeling, more jazz than electronic in that sense. I have included many of the versions that artists have done of my tracks for the new album “Reworks”, nearly all the other songs are new to me this year and are sign posts to some of my earliest influences in style. I threw one old song in there by LJ Kruzer, there was a lot of amazing debut music that came out in the period after CD’s stopped selling well in the mid 2000’s and before the internet could be considered a legitimate income stream. I don’t think some of these artists ever got their due and a foothold for a lengthy career, so I wanted to shine a light on an old track too. Enjoy!" ~ James Heather

As a child in Southampton, Heather’s Grandad taught him composition and how to manipulate the tuning of piano strings, whilst his Granny on the other side used to dabble in improvisations. Heather started to make his own music from the age of 11 inspired by a love of Beethoven, Debussy and his older neighbours Acid House pirate radio station which he listened to from the garden. Heather spent many years honing his solo piano composition style before feeling ready to record and release his own music, taking influence from electronic music's structure, ambience and melody and combining it with a grounding in classical and jazz. 

He now releases music on Ninja Tune founders Coldcut’s Ahead Of Our Time label. First came Modulations: EP 1, 7 tracks written in various head spaces. Next came his debut album Stories From Far Away On Piano, a more unified conceptual piece of work. The album concept centred on Heathers interpretations of real world news stories from 9 locations. Heather has collaborated and been remixed by names including Dawn Richard, Mumdance, Iskra Strings, DJ Seinfeld, Sarah Davachi and Roger Robinson (King Midas Sound), played on bills with the likes of Laura Marling, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Lubomyr Melnyk and performed at festivals such as Glastonbury and Wilderness.
