Asemix is the collaborative project of Mari Maurice (aka more eaze) and Nick Zanca (fka Mister Lies) exploring the blurry space between pop abstraction, electro-acoustic zones and sound collage. Their self-titled debut record is the culmination of a year of remote collaboration, stem-swapping, blind trust and an almost telepathic creative process. 

“I really had no idea what form it would take. It seemed equally likely to manifest itself through song-form or collage,” shares Mari Maurice about her (lack of) expectations at the beginning of the creative process. Nick Zanca continues: “…she sent over a few sketches with a few overdubbed layers of edited improvisations for me to work with, which quickly evolved into a reciprocal back-and-forth.” By the summer of 2020, the duo racked up quite a lot of material, a combination of heavily processed and treated acoustic performances, synth work, field recordings and found sounds. Over the next few months, this material was refined, spliced and moulded into the duo's debut album. Across five tracks and 41 minutes of we’re introduced to a sound world that feels granular yet fluid, and one that is somehow both half-awake and fully immersive. 

Whether it’s the mysterious atmospheres and deep bass rumblings of the opening “Phantom Lung”, the more noisy meanderings of “Rehearsal Earthquake” or the glitchy, fully fledged euphoria of the closing “Communal Nude”, 'Asemix' draws you in. There’s something very welcoming about these sounds, it’s like you’re on the verge of remembering them; a half-forgotten dream, a memory you only have an old image to thank for, in aural form. 

The kinship, shared artistic sensibility and chemistry between Maurice and Zanca is strikingly obvious. The latter calls Asemix “one of the most fruitful and careful collaborations” he’s ever been involved in and the former continues to be in awe of the results: “It still blows my mind how much these pieces feel like they're occupying the same physical space despite recording these tracks on opposite sides of the country.” If this is the spirit and energy they can create remotely, it’s very exciting to imagine what Asemix can make when they finally meet.

A quick glance at the tracklist of the latest Theory Therapy mix is enough to pique the interest of any music fan. Seeing Cocteau Twins, Burial, Vegyn, Pub, Jens Lekman and a recording from a Wim Wender’s film alongside one another, you might not be entirely sure what to expect, but if you’re familiar with the Texas-based musician more eaze, you basically know that it’s going to be really great and completely unique.

Mari Maurice is one of those rare artists who manages to pull things off that just shouldn’t work on paper. Whether that means releasing autotuned emo ambient or mixing Jens Lekman with IDM icons Pub, Mari makes everything she does sound so good you can’t believe nobody has thought to do it already. That ceaseless creativity and clear passion for music seems to be the driving force behind everything she does, from her label with Claire Rousay and solo releases to her forthcoming collaborative project with New York artist Mister Lies. It's also probably what makes her mix one of the most engrossing and enjoyable I’ve heard in ages.

Theory Therapy 23: more eaze

Glasswort is and acts as a medium. A means of transmission, a channel, a liminal state, a container, an environment. A sympathetic vessel, a palette, a mirror - it centers itself in giving and receiving. In this it is both lost and found. Here it finds purpose, but not meaning. It transcribes and is transcribed in the process. As a lens, it brings those around it into focus yet cannot see itself. The soda ash from incinerated glasswort is used to make glass, valued for its crystal clear color. Sympathetic to the season, their stems take on rich purples, reds and pinks moving into leaf season - dappling the marshes like mome raths. You may also know it as swampfire, sea bean, samphire or pickleweed.

Latin: Salicornia depressa, roughly meaning depressed salt horn/branch 

Properties: A member of the goosefoot clade, Glasswort is equal parts vegetable, herb and spice. Much like oysters, kelp and other aquacultures - seabeans are a purifying force both within and without. As a halophytic plant (salt-tolerant) that can thrive in saline wastewater, it has the dual value of being a nutritious, commercially-valued vegetables and also treating wastewater from commercial fishing or shrimp operations. Glasswort is a vitamin and ionic mineral powerhouse; it is rich in calcium, iron, iodine, magnesium, copper, potassium, fiber and Vitamins, A, B, C + D. It is also very high in protein for a vegetable. You can find this small, bush-like succulent in the middle + lower levels of salt marshes in May-August in New England. Virginia Glasswort is widely distributed, from the coasts of FL to PEI in the Atlantic and from CA to BC in the Pacific. It is lovely raw, pickled, as a seasoning or cooked as a vegetable. 

Companions: Glasswort seeds are a vital food source for passerine birds and geese. It also provides a safe-haven for insects and snails, such as the marsh periwinkle and western pygmy blue, during high tides.The endangered salt marsh harvest mouse relies exclusively on Glasswort for its habitat and primary food source. They eat pickleweed and climb on top if its sturdy leaves to forage more efficiently.

NTsKi is a Kyoto-based artist, musician. She began making music while living in the UK and began working in earnest in 2017 after returning to Japan. She works seamlessly to create tracks with gentle but somewhat eerie vocals and a mixture of diverse musicality. In 2021, she was selected by Bijutsu Techo as one of the newcomer artists who will open up the 2020s. Her collaboration with 7FO, released through EM Records, was selected as one of the best of the year by Shintaro Sakamoto. In addition to her self-produced works, she has participated in the works of Giant Claw, CVN, Shokuhin Matsuri a.k.a foodman, Dengaryu, KM, etc., and has released through overseas labels including TAR and Orange Milk. Also, she has contributed music to the Japan Pavilion hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry at SXSW 2019, where Yoichi Ochiai was the general director, virtual singer te'resa, and an Australian bag brand. On August 6th, 2021, her debut album "Orca" will be released via Orange Milk / EM Records.

The spruce family is a family of particular warmth - drawing their warming powers into the white nights of the midnight sun and mild summers of the high north. Norway Spruce are sentinels that envelope their network of companions in a blanket of protective, feminine energy. A lymphatic, respiratory and immune system healer. Often used, alongside birches, for maypole traditions. A ballast of light in the darkest times.

Properties: Poultice for chronic and acute wounds, stimulates interior and exterior circulation (treating nerve pain, revitalizing skin, increasing blood supply and acting as an expectorant), high in Vitamin C, long living, evergreen, wind resistant and fast growing.
