Ukrainian DJ, producer and cyberpunk RAAVEL debuts on DJ MELL G’s imprint, JUICY GANG RECORDS. Enter INSECT REPLICANT, a 4-track, broken-beat-meets-electro EP that conveys RAAVEL’s crunchy vibe to a tee. 

‘AYAYAY’ blends a distorted vocal with a nasty synthline and 2-step kickdrums, creating a futuristic sound that only RAAVEL knows how to pen. An EBM-flavoured snythline dominates on ‘BLATZER’ while zappy sound FX cut through the atmosphere—a dirty jam made for a basement rave situation. The title tune ‘INSECT REPLICANT’ is a proper banger. At 144 BPM, an acid bassline, snappy percussion, and staccato synth notes evoke tension, but it still maintains a club-driven feel. The closing tune ‘WAKALAKA’ merges electronica and electro, as a raw drum pattern punctuates each bar and provokes anarchistic energy. One for the die-hard punks of this world.  

Following releases on LAP and mystictrax, INSECT REPLICANT marks another upward step in RAAVEL’s trajectory, with his anomalous sound reflecting the always-evolving aesthetic of JUICY GANG RECORDS.

This is the first release in a series of charity compilations dedicated to the indomitable spirit of Ukrainians. Currently, our families are facing challenges such as living in a total blackout, with no electricity, water, and internet for 40-60 hours or more, in cold buildings, wearing every piece of clothing we have to keep ourselves warm. These are some of the hardest times we have experienced during this war, but we will stand to the end. This release is also dedicated to all the people around the world who have helped us and to those who still continue to support us during these difficult times. That's where the name of the series ("VOLUNTEERS") and release ("BLACKOUT") came from. Anyone who has supported Ukraine in any way is a volunteer. In the context of this compilation, every musician, mastering engineer, artwork designer, and person who buys the release or a track from it is also a volunteer.

The idea for this VA (various artists) compilation was born at the start of the war, when I realized that my efforts should be solely focused on helping my fellow Ukrainians. My friend and I even started a bulletproof vest manufacturing company on the second week of the full-scale invasion, when all import and supply chains were completely disrupted. Our territorial defense forces were lacking equipment and were forced to fight back the aggressor almost in tracksuits. In my free time, I was searching for and contacting artists, trying to find a way to distract myself from the reality of the situation.

For number 10 of our mix series, we are excited to present you Hermeth, one of the five members of the Geneva-based Brainwaves crew. He has been releasing his own unique brand of bangers since early 2019. He fuses his signature saturated acid sound with fiercely dirty ghetto beats to create a distinct style that has gained support from artists such as Miley Serious, My Nu Leng, The Glitch Mob, Daria Kolosova, Denham Audio, Solid Blake, Aloka, DJ Mell G, JKS, and many others. Both his DJ sets and productions are known for being rough, raw, and rapid. Hermeth's no-nonsense approach to music production and DJ-ing has helped him gain recognition beyond the electro community. He has released five EPs, remixes, and contributed to various V/A's on labels like Typeless Records, Scuffed Recs, Haws, Carouse, Molekül, and others.
