Phantom Frequencies

The record­ings of this pro­gram can­not be trus­ted. They were made unin­ten­tion­ally or occurred without any human inter­ac­tion. Some of them – like elec­tro­mag­net­ic inter­fer­ences — can be explained sci­en­tific­ally, oth­ers can­not. What con­nects all of them is their unex­pec­ted appear­ance. These sounds emerged from noth­ing­ness –like phantoms. They mani­fes­ted on old tapes, online stream­ing chan­nels, dis­rup­ted hard discs and broken stu­dio gear, record­ings played at the wrong speed o rac­ci­dent­ally con­tam­in­ated by out­er sig­nal inter­fer­ences.

Felix Kubin is a com­poser, cre­at­or of radio plays, per­former, media artist and cur­at­or. A lovech­ild of the home record­ing era (he star­ted to com­pose elec­tron­ic 4‑trackmusic at the age of 12), his activ­it­ies span futur­ist pop, elec­troacous­tic and cham­ber­orches­tra music, radio art, lec­ture per­form­ances and writing.

S.E.T.I.

We find ourselves submerged beneath a derelict central Berlin building occupied by artists and anarchists. It is flooded with heavy electronic noise, smoke, damp stale air, and unfettered indifference.

The individual creating the noise is not visible, all we see are the loudspeakers behind a barrier. The performer becomes utterly irrelevant, and I decide the sound might as well be coming from a swollen tomato. 

As the noise reaches its peak, bouncing off the dirty brick basement walls, I feel compelled to shout back in response. A German lady asks if I am part of the performance, and I tell her that we all are.

The filmmaker and writer Charlie Shackleton explores the rocky ground of the public domain through the contested history of a single song - Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land.

One of the most famous odes to the public commons ever composed, Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land offers a playful rebuke to the ‘big high wall’ of private property. In this documentary of legal interruptions, Charlie explores the history of the song and asks how much of our shared cultural history is truly shared, and how much should be?

Featuring interviews with Joe Klein (Woody Guthrie's biographer), Jennifer Jenkins (from the Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke Law School) and Charlotte Vaughan (Senior Intellectual Property Counsel at BBC Legal) and archive of Nora Guthrie from Songlines in 2009 (presented by John Cavanagh and produced by Fiona Croall) , Woody Guthrie from the BBC's Children's Hour in 1944, Pete Seeger from the 1968 documentary Bound for Glory and 'Interview with Flora Robertson about Dust Storms in Oklahoma, August 5, 1940' courtesy of the Library of Congress.
