Long term Seven Hills friend and collaborator Thee J Johanz returns to wax for the third instalment of our original release series. 

This release runs close to the heart for Johanz as it was produced in the wake of his mother’s passing and stands as a profoundly personal eulogy for loved ones passed. Where Goes Your Soul? has all the trademark spiralling synth lines and hypnotic rhythm making that we have come to love in Johanz’s music making. 

The title track of the EP: Where Goes Your Soul? stands alone on the A side but carries more than enough weight to hold its own. Stabbing synths build alongside a subtly haunting vocal, up to an awesome crescendo and intoxicating groove. Kicking off the B side is Two C Bee, an aptly psychedelic mix of soft pads and helical synth arpeggios. The EP closes with an impressive bubbling analogue landscape, Analex. This beat-less masterpiece with a sincerely cinematic feel, rounds things off in style.

Casting its net far and wide, from Australia to Finland, via the UK and Tunisia, One Eye Witness’ maiden VA drop gathers a quartet of the international producers who’ve come to pique our interest in recent months.
Starting with Tunis-based up-and-comer HearThug, who steps up with “Alien All Too Alien” - a steadily pulsatory, 303-marinated dasher interlarded with flocks of pugnacious talk box stabs and rattling drums, making it a proper DJ-friendly weapon for any hour of the day. Helsinki’s Jeku follows up with the tribal acid churner ‘Aftermath’, laying down a sleek, sub-heavy earworm prepped on submerging systems from under the deepest layers of the spectrum with its fluttering melody, sturdy basswork and FX-laden synthesis.
Flip the coin over and here goes London-based groove manipulator Sohrab, entering the melee with ‘Ataraxia’ - a hypnotic slice of stealth mode, Gaussian-blurred dub techno that does exactly what’s written on the tin. The final number ’Surrender’ comes courtesy of rising Sydney-based producer Cousin, who treats us to a tripped-out ethereal riddim making the rounds betwixt the vaporous serenity of ambient and deep dub vibrations. After the success of Cosmoba’s debut release ‘Lost In The System’, label owner Kalcagni returns with another 4 tracker of vibey electro and breaks.

Kicking off with ‘Mute Mode’, which channels deep house and acid influences, laced over chunky breaks and a warm analog bass. ‘Up Here (In The Head)’ follows up with another 303 workout, layered with infectious bass hooks and effected synth trills.

On the flip side, ’System Addict’ ups the BPM’s and flexes a more upfront electro groove, with beefy drums, gnarly melodic stabs and a twisted, resonant bassline. Whilst ‘Worn Out Version’ provides a more mellow and alternative vibe to close out the EP, with squelchy modular synth riffs and lush minor chords.

On a record that’s as well-rounded as it is diverse, ‘Florion Heights’ launches the EP into the stratosphere and beyond, with high-energy drums and rich, optimistic synths leading into a euphoric crescendo, all locked together with a fat, bobbing bassline. ‘Comfort Zone’ is the perfect proceeder as you enter inter-stellar space, floating in its lavish, airy pads, deep bass and snappy broken beats… with crystal tones layered harmoniously together resulting in a track filled with positivity and charm. Wrapping up the record is ‘The Mothership’ – a near 10-minute voyage, abducting the listener with a hypnotising rhythm and bassline that carries the cinematic atmospherics and progression into a weird and wonderful finale.
