@nightmares-on-wax “I made this mix after my interview and conversation with Ralph Moore for Mixmag, and it's inspired by lots of the music and references we were discussing. I wanted to do a mix for Mixmag you wouldn’t usually get going through soul, funk, reggae, disco, R&B and house. All the songs are tunes I’ve been digging this past year during the pandemic. I had a lot of fun digging records for this mix and recorded it live in my studio The Other Ship in Ibiza.”

The Cover Mix: Nightmares On Wax

Not many producers can create new aliases after 10+ years and still manage to drop something completely unexpected and refreshing. 

Peter Rogers’ Wardown project did just that in 2020, debuted on the respected Blu Mar Ten label, the self-titled album found admirers from a cross-section of music styles; spanning Jungle, Drum’n Bass and a strong atmospheric element. Wardown / Wardown was consequently one of my most played and admired albums of the year (finding a sweet spot in my Reflection on 2020 mix of course). I found it near impossible to stop the album once it started, as it flowed easily between stories, styles, and sentimental reflection. 

Peter is now set to drop his second album under the Wardown alias, simply titled Wardown II, but those who absorbed the nostalgia from his first, will undoubtedly be confident that despite its modest title, the conceptual approach is as strong as ever, and the music will once again be left to do the storytelling. 

Continuing with this brilliant reflective approach from the first album, Wardown II can be considered another vivid capture of one of Peter’s undoubtedly many memories he has begun to create with this alias. And just like his productions, his isolatedmix is a natural extension of this approach. As is the case with many producers in this genre, DJ’ing is integral to the culture, so it’s of no surprise for us to be treated to a little bit of a masterclass with this latest installment…

This month’s Bright Patterns is a special tribute to Norm Chambers, who sadly passed away in November from a rare form of sinus cancer. Norm released a prolific amount of material under his own name and several other monikers over the years, such as Panabrite, Jürgen Müller, and Spiral Index. Following a two-hour tribute for 2021’s No Way Back comprised entirely of Norm’s music, this edition of Panabrite Patterns features four talented artists who connected deeply with the unique world imagined within his productions. William Selman presents a mix of selections they shared as favorites. Joshua Davison created six original tracks with Norm’s sonic pathways in mind. Matthew Patterson Curry crafted an extensive soundscape inspired by the simplicity and freedom of Norm’s rich output. The final portion is a hybrid mix from Jonas Reinhardt, who released the first edition of “The Encyclopedia of Civilizations” with Norm under his Jürgen Müller alias.

Panabrite Patterns: A Tribute to Norm Chambers @ The Lot Radio 12 - 08 - 2022

For this challenge, I re-used the samples I made way back for Disquiet 0262 in 2017.  This time though, I processed the sample using the modular - One side of Lubadh playing the sample, the other echoing it, then Clouds and Rings both process it as well. I then played the faders on my mixer to create a track, that sounds quite warm for an ice bath!

My heart dropped when I saw this image. I find the conduct of the States in international affairs disgraceful. But then looking at the layered flags I reflected on more positive aspects: on the beautiful people I've known and the inspiring culture.

I used my mountain dulcimer which is a genuine North American instrument (although with fitting irony my instrument is made in Pakistan which I found gently subversive). I played based on american primitivism and eastern influences (listen to https://soundcloud.com/deanmcphee/glass-hills for a better example of this approach) and then layered the sound with lots of ambient echo.

Underneath it all is the first note of Hendrix's star spangled banner which I stretched 10,000% and pitched down to fit into the track.

i wanted this to sound like a summer storm brooding, a muggy humid feel, and it being a long ago memory.

In audacity i took the whole sample paulstretched it to ~8 minutes and really smoothed out (cos there's loads of elements in the sample that i wanted to create gradual shifts and depth) then increased the volume of the low end rumble. then time stretched it down by half so the tonal shifts are more pronounced (and cos i'm running out of time on my sc account!)

then i recorded it to cassette on my teac tape deck and then recorded this back onto pc with a sony ex505 walkman to give a bit of hiss and warmth (and for that long ago memory feel).

Summer Storm (memory)

so, weird synchronicity again; this track https://soundcloud.com/sevenism/summer-storm-memory i did the other day fits the bill perfectly it was about a childhood memory of a summer storm. rather than just add that though i used the same method so it's kind of like a part 2

i remembered when i was a kid a bunch of at a birthday party in our garden were jumping on my poor dad.. at the time it was so much fun but i'm guessing it wasnt for him!

i associate the harmonica with dad, its the first instrument i think i fell in love with and dad was gonna give me his harmonica a few yrs back but it's lost somewhere, but he got me a new one which can hear on here.. so that represents dad.. then i slowed it down and blurred it righht out for the passage of time feel

then the other sounds are a guitar with loads of reverse delay; that's us bothering him, again blurred a bit.

then like summer storm i recorded to tape and then back onto pc via walkman, i like the warp at the start and the wow n flutter but not enough hiss!

This week’s Junto is project proposed by Robert Thomas, a longtime participant. Having proposed the project, he’ll also listen to and comment on various posted tracks as the project unfolds.

A bit about him: Robert Thomas creates procedural music and sound systems. In 2010 he worked on Inception the App (5 million downloads), while at RjDj. He has worked with Hans Zimmer, Imogen Heap, Junkie XL, Air, Carl Craig, Jimmy Edgar, and Bookashade. His current projects are systems for VR, AR, health, meditation, and AI/robotics.

These are the steps for this week’s project:

Step 1: Remember a key moment in your life. It could be anything at any age.

Step 2: Conjure the sound of that moment in your mind, how you remember it, how you have come to remember it.

Step 3: Recreate that sound and feeling through sound design and music.

for me complexity is a conceptual endeavour, it's more about the process than the outcome. at the moment, i see complexity as an integration of disparate elements: subjective-objective, creative-analytical, individual-communal, present-past etc. i'm aware that every piece of music i do follows on from another, they are related to each other in some (small?) way. working intuitively allows this to come out i think, but in addition i always combine conscious conceptual elements from previous efforts - my hope is that my soundcloud timeline provides a natural progression track to track. 

i've been working a lot with samples on my last few tracks, so i didn't add anything else. i just went through and isolated small sounds i liked then stretched them and blended in over the course of track (like in sleeping church) but here i was more interested in getting a balance between texture and frequency. i've been working with dronefx on my mixcloud pieces so i used that to generate some note progressions and changed the pitch of the low end sounds. i wanted to make an ambient piece that gradually develops with more texture (again like in all my recent pieces) and i used the concepts of the last two disquiet projects to complement this: i recorded the piece to tape as in summer:impermanence (& fortuitously coz it was the same decrepit old tape a little snippet of that track comes through right at the start!) then i faded between the tape version into the 'clean' version as the track progresses (like in last weeks project).

i wanted the finished piece to sound completely different to the source but still retain something of the spirit of it. i tested this by fading in and out my favourite section of the original  right at the end and i think it works pretty well.

Disquiet Junto Project 0188: Complex Complex
Take a provided track and make it more complex.

This project was proposed by Guy Birkin and Jay Bodley (aka Sun Hammer). It extends the thinking that went into their album Complexification, released by the record label Entr’acte. (http://entracte.co.uk/projects/guy-birkin–sun-hammer-e187/)

These are the steps for this project:

Step 1: Pick one of the two tracks at the following URL: https://goo.gl/tN4Oit.

Step 2: Modify that one track in any way, using as much or little of it as you like, to make a new piece that sounds “more complex” than the original. You may add other sounds. (Note: You are free to use any definition or measure of “complexity.” You should be sure to describe your process and how it “increases” the complexity of the original track.)

Background: The album Complexification by Guy Birkin and Sun Hammer “explores musical complexity through a collaborative process based on a set of rules.” Those rules involved the two musicians swapping successive copies of a track in order to make it progressively more “complex.” For their purposes, they defined “complexity” as follows: “In this project, complexity is understood in terms of the quantity and variety of musical elements or patterns. The result is two parallel threads of music, each representing a progression of increasing complexity.”
