The theme for today’s music selection is songs that invoke memories of moments and people.

To be honest, given the current state of violence, hate, and ongoing genocide in the world, it feels somewhat surreal to share the first episode of the Local Strangers radio/cast. It can be difficult to find joy, smile, or celebrate the music that evokes beautiful memories in our lives when we witness the tragic events not far from where we record this. However, in our eyes, music serves as a portal to better times and can remind us of the good moments in these dark times. Music often provides solace for those overwhelmed by a sense of doom, which is why we believe it's the right moment to share this today.

Local Strangers aspires to be a platform for WOMXN who wish to learn and participate in the music, nightlife, and event industries by offering them space to explore, learn, and thrive, something that we aren't always granted in these male-dominated industries.

Meet our first local stranger: Berlin-based artist fumi (@fumixoxo) in our first guest mix. 

Today’s mix will move you to the sounds of hard groove, trance, acid, and techno elements. As always, sexiness is the underlying theme of the artist's picks.

Boston-native, fumi, will admit navigating the scene as a woman of colour hasn’t come without challenge. Notably, the amplification of womxn has also exposed deeper issues in the scene, where uplifting womxn is more often based on appearances and satisfying the ‘quota’ in a lineup, rather than applauding and making authentic space for FLINTA.

Hannah (aka Fumi) found her artistic calling unexpectedly while pursuing her Master’s degree in Berlin. fumi was initially inspired by other FLINTA artists in the city who curated unapologetically positive atmospheres on the dance floor which inspired her to transition from a consumer to a contributor in the Berlin music scene.

In just a year, fumi has become an up-and-coming name, headlining local gigs and gaining attention for her mixes on Soundcloud. 

The name "fumi" pays tribute to her Chinese refugee-turned-US immigrant grandmother, symbolising the resilience of women of colour and connecting her to her roots beyond music. As she learns while she grows into her artistic identity, her sound and influence continue to ebb and flow in new directions.
