The award winning SFJAZZ High School All-Stars program provides advanced-level training and performance opportunities for some of the most talented musicians in the nation. Selected annually by competitive audition, the All-Stars rehearse and perform with today's top jazz educators and artists.

Through the SFJAZZ Meet the Masters program, All-Stars members enjoy regular workshops, master classes and mentoring sessions with leading artists, such as Miguel Zenon and the SFJAZZ Collective, Terence Blanchard, Yusef Lateef, Ravi Coltrane, and Ellis Marsalis.

SFJAZZ High School All-Stars 2016 Release!
Directed by esteemed educator and performer Paul Contos, the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Big Band is comprised of 22 of the finest young Bay Area jazz musicians, selected annually by competitive audition.

The ensemble has appeared at the SFJAZZ Center's Historic Opening Night Concert, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition, and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Ensemble members enjoy regular workshops, master classes and mentoring sessions with leading artists, such as members of the SFJAZZ Collective, Terence Blanchard, Esperanza Spalding, and Vijay Iyer.

The rewards are evident in their "dynamite" (JazzTimes) performances, which give “testimony to the continuing persistence of the creative spirit” (Los Angeles Times). "These kids are amazing," wrote the San Jose Mercury News, "jazz has a future!"

SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Combo

In addition to its award-winning Big Band, the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars presents its 8-piece Combo, directed by renowned saxophonist and educator Dann Zinn.

Comprised of the "best of the best" Bay Area high school students, this small ensemble is designed to mirror the SFJAZZ Collective in instrumentation as well as select repertoire. The octet focuses on writing original compositions and arrangements, along with performing and arranging works by the SFJAZZ Collective. Combo members also take part in exclusive interdisciplinary partnerships and performances with Bay Area arts and science organizations, involving innovative composition and performance techniques.
