Herb Alpert - Sneaky ('In the Mood' out 9/30)

"Feel the Bern" is our nod to Bernie Sanders. The song is both upbeat and aggressive. The three note phrases (“Feel the Bern, feel the Bern”) build to a frenzy of excitement, and briefly settle down into a sultry medium tempo interlude. It reflects our view of Sanders' varied personality. But ultimately, Stephen Riley's tenor saxophone transitions the song to an ever increasing level of fire.

"I Did Chop Down that Cherry Tree" describes the soft spoken surgeon Ben Carson. He kind of shot himself (or his campaign) in the foot when he struggled to convince people of his early life misdeeds (going after his mother with a hammer and trying to stab a childhood friend). It's as if he was saying, "I'm NOT just Mr Nice Guy. I DID chop down that cherry tree!!" Jason Marsalis gives us a musical picture on the drums of what Ben says he did. The song is slow and deliberate, but really quite playful.

Making America Great Again (All by Myself), is about Donald Trump. Jason whistles at the beginning, as if he's relaxed and looking over his vast real estate holdings. Alphonso Horne interrupts the whistling to make a bold and audacious statement on trumpet, giving a kind of superhero feeling to the piece. Check out Jason's laugh at the end.

Our song for Hillary is called "It's My Turn." Hillary has been in the public eye for years and years. After years of public service in Arkansas, serving as First Lady, losing to Barack Obama in 2008, and serving as Secretary of State in 2012, she's running for President again. If I were Hillary I know I'd be thinking "It's my turn!" This piece also represents the complexity and intrigue that has surrounded Hillary Clinton since the 1990s. It has meter and rhythmic changes, alternates between minor and major key centers, and is cool, calculated, but ultimately quite soulful, melodic, and expressive.
