Take an audio stroll through San Francisco’s Mission District and learn about the murals seen throughout the neighborhood and the artists who collaborated to create them. Local writers Olivia Peña and Josiah Luis Alderete interweave their perspectives on the history of the Mission Muralismo movement with stories from the muralists themselves.

Kara Walker is best known for her installations of large cut-paper silhouettes that use the iconography of folklore and stereotype to address themes of race, history, and gender. Though seemingly cartoonish and simple in form, the silhouettes comprise unsettling and grisly imagined narratives drawn from African American history from the Antebellum to the present. In this artist talk, originally presented on January 29, 2005, Walker delves into her personal history, her artistic development, and the influences and ideas that inform her work. The program begins with an introduction by SFMOMA’s former Elise S. Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture, Madeleine Grynsztejn, and concludes with a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Public Programs Archive: Kara Walker Artist Talk (January 29, 2005)

This artist talk by Chicano performance artist, visual artist, writer, and activist Guillermo Gómez-Peña was given in June 1996, coinciding with the release of his book "The New World Border: Prophecies, Poems, and Loqueras for the End of the Century." Gómez-Peña performs passages that wittily touch on themes common in his work: geopolitics, identity politics, displacement, ethnic stereotyping, and the interplay between race and language. Throughout the performance he switches between English, Spanish, Spanglish, and “indigenous dialects,” exploring the concept of translation as he moves through topics of identity and nationality.

Public Programs Archive: Guillermo Gómez-Peña: The New World Border (June 22, 1996)

Originally presented on May 6, 1993, in conjunction with "Thresholds and Enclosures," this program showcases three of the exhibition’s featured artists—Gretchen Bender, Julia Scher, and Dara Birnbaum—in conversation with Robert R. Riley, former SFMOMA curator of media arts. Bender begins, describing how a public health crisis influenced her televisual work in the 1980s; individual presentations by Scher and Birnbaum follow. Throughout the talk, the panelists critically engage with topical issues of cyberculture, surveillance, media representation, and viewer participation. The program concludes with an informative question-and-answer session with the audience.

Public Programs Archive: Panel Discussion w/ Gretchen Bender, Dara Birnbaum & Julia Scher (May 1993)

Though best known for his playful photographs of dogs, William Wegman has also produced a large and stylistically varied body of animal-free artwork throughout his successful career. In this artist talk, originally presented on August 16, 1988, in conjunction with the exhibition "William Wegman: Polaroids and Videos," the artist illuminates lesser-known aspects of his oeuvre, including his paintings, drawings, and conceptual art. During her introduction of Wegman, SFMOMA Senior Curator of Photography Sandra S. Phillips notes, “I’ve never seen our exhibition spaces more crowded with happy viewers, nor listened to more guffaws as for our current show.” Indeed, Wegman delivers a comically deadpan review of his work. The recording concludes with a question-and-answer session with the audience.
