Two of the UK’s finest dance producers tackle DJ Q and Hans Glader’s anthemic single ‘Thief in the Night’.

The latest in a series of new DJ Q releases on Local Action that will continue throughout 2021, ‘Thief in the Night’ hasn’t stopped moving since its February release, with at least one BBC Radio 1 play per week since it dropped. 

On this remix package, salute brings out the pianos and sets his sights to the stratosphere, while Al Wootton takes things down with his instantly recognisable combination of expert UKG drums and live dubbed out effects.

Releasing for the first time under a fresh alias, @djadhdgotbngrz steps up with ‘Vortex’ EP on @prettyweirdrecords, a 4-track record highlighting the producer’s expansion from 140 and grime as ALXZNDR, part of the DEEP MEDi family, to a refined signature sound positioned within the UK techno realm.

‘Wobble’ utilises Alex’s UK funky background with giddy bass loops alongside drums that break apart and reassemble intermittently, invoking a sense of being locked in somewhere hostile.

After dropping no less than three compilations over the Summer months, 3024 shifts its focus back to releasing genre-defying EP's, this time by one of the brightest talents on the bass spectrum: Otik. 

The prolific Londoner brings us four excellent mood excursions ranging from the euphoric to the straight up nasty. Title track "Soulo" is the soundtrack for a post-covid world with its contemporary approach to m25 cornfield rave euphoria, while "Paradise Mode" reinterprets the deeper 90s Headz vibes of luminaries such as Lemon D and J Majik. "Lightyear Dub" is the penultimate 3024 track, with its sci-fi atmospheres and propelling beats and basslines, and will surely be a staple in many DJ sets. As the closer to this EP, "Garuna" is a rough, moody beast of a tune inhabiting that exciting 100-110 territory.

Companion track “Witness” then proceeds to espouse many a jungle mainstay alongside a thoroughly broken beat and a devilish chant of “you were there, so was I” (hence the title) – seemingly casting off aspersions of Ashley’s prodigiousness precluding him from having partaken in the jungle phenomenon at its inception. The movement is timeless, however, he insists, both in intent and execution.

Keplrr returns with his second release, Reconstructed Club, on Control Freak Recordings, the sister label of the infamous London party, Cabin Fever. Like his debut EP Translucent, his sophomore release showcases a similar aesthetic, taking inspiration from UK techno and flaunting his knack for meticulous sound design. Our pick titled ‘Bods Realm’ takes a deep drive through spaced-out effects and harsh Warp-esque synth stabs, skilfully complemented with weighty sub-bass.

As an offspring of the ∄ club project, for its 1st-anniversary @standard-deviation presents a compilation of tracks by eight emerging Ukrainian artists with diverse musical backgrounds. The compilation aims to reflect the current state of the Ukrainian electronic music scene. 

It includes Nastya Vogan and Recid, residents of the ∄ club, Voin Oruwu with his futurist sound, singers, and producers from Lviv Katarina Gryvul and Maryana Klochko, Pep Gaffe community resident Tofudj, experimental musician John Object, as well as hardcore and gabber music purveyor Genetica.

Brain De Palma - Call Me By Your Nail EP

Following releases and collaborations from Maurice Fulton, DMX Krew and London’s JRMS, the fifth installment on Peggy Gou’s Gudu imprint introduces another new artist. Brain De Palma is the fresh alias of compulsive crate digger Alexei Versino, who has previously released on labels including Rush Hour, Dekmantel and Off Minor, as one half of cult duo Stump Valley and solo as Panama Keys.

Born in Ukraine, Brain De Palma’s parents chose to leave the area following the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Settling as a child in Turin, the Italian ‘motor city’, Versino was immersed in the local techno scene in his teens and many more since, navigating Europe for decades, immersed in disparate musical corners, from the squat raves of early-noughties Bristol to the laid back charm of the Balearics and the cultural contrasts of Egypt. Much as his life has changed, a heart-on-sleeve love of both music and cinema have informed Versino’s often spontaneous journey, just as they inform ‘Call Me By Your Nail’, his assured and sophisticated four-track debut EP for Gudu.

Recorded with imagination and much-needed optimism during the initial stages of 2020, ‘Particle Fever’ begins in earnest as a detailed introduction to the liquid smooth sonic aesthetic of Brain De Palma, with a warm, slow-trance atmosphere evolving to generate the sort of melodies that would sit front-and-centre on less refined productions. Instead, the intent is quietly anthemic, an understated approach that equally informs the blissful electronics found on ‘Farout’, an almost psychedelic exercise that finds ethereal tones and rhythmic peace in the analogue extremes of De Palma’s studio.

These impulses switch from fluttering to fantastical on the title track, ‘Call Me By Your Nail’. Undoubtedly taking inspiration from Middle-Eastern styled arrangements and naturalistic sounds, De Palma’s adaptation, influenced by his time on the Sinai Peninsula, creates a refreshingly innovative sound palette in this offbeat machine translation. Finally, riding on only the slightest percussion, Versino creates a compelling, acid-tinged trip across ‘Clockroom’, rolling out suspense, tension and subtle euphoria often with only the subtlest of oscillations.
