What are you lis­ten­ing for? to? ​‘Listening Past’ is a performance<>lecture secret­ly serv­ing as an ali­bi tap­ping those always as-yet-unknown lines to sig­nal that the future leaks. Fixed, homoge­nous time assumes a standard(ized) pro­gres­sive flow where what is next always comes after what is before. But, will there not have been count­less moments of achronic­i­ty when signs of antic­i­pa­tion can be (mis)heard in reverse (à la Pierre Menard & Bayard)?

@moma_ready arrived on a wave of acclaim that hasn't at all subsided in the four or so years since his debut. The NYC-based skateboarder and musician runs the Haus of Altr label and also makes ambient, as well as films. He has had particular success producing with AceMo as AceMoMA, such as on April's standout album, A Future. As the title suggests, it took in the dustier end of 90s jungle, rough-edged house and Detroit techno, but turned out something forward-looking. Whatever MoMA Ready does, it comes through a proudly Afrofuturist lens, always with unbridled energy and the ability to make you question everything you thought you knew. 

This week's mix packs an awful lot in. It - of course - eschews the traditional model of a slow build towards a peak-time workout. Instead, the music just goes where MoMA wants, whenever he wants. Even the transitions play second fiddle to the selections, which is fine when the tunes are this good. Some are deep, some are smooth, there are lo-fi bangers and seductive rollers. It's the sound of a DJ going all in without a care in the world.

A new sound work by Ain Bailey and Ego Ahaiwe Sowinski, commissioned as part of Desperate Living C-19.

‘Remember to Exhale’ is a meditation resource and tool. An exploration of what it means as an artist in this moment to produce and create from a place of rest and restoration. The notion of rest has been part of an ongoing transatlantic conversation the artists have been participating in. To exhale stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), the reminder to exhale, is meant to encourage and support the act of relaxation, healing and to aid in the recovery of trauma. 

The meditation utilises soundscapes created by Sayge Caroll and Ego Ahaiwe Sowinski in 2017 at Sayge’s home studio in South Minneapolis. The audio was originally created as part of a performance curated by Nicole M. Smith for Patrick’s Cabaret, ‘Controlled Burn’ series, held at Intermedia Arts, (Minneapolis) titled Stardate:02.20.2017, which included poetry by Keegan Xavi. Bailey and Ahaiwe Sowinski ‘remix’ the material into a 10 minute meditation. 

Alongside this sound work, Bailey and Ahaiwe Sowinski have produced a new limited edition screenprint. The print has been produced with the generous support of contemporary serigraph artist Aida Wilde. Half of all sales will be donated to East London Out Project (ELOP). ELOP is a holistic lesbian and gay centre that offers a much needed range of social, emotional and support services to LGBT communities.

"Je suis une âme solitaire

I did this mix years ago, at a time when I was still trying to find my way through Berlin and trying to figure out my own voice with sound. 2020 has been a destabilizing year for most of us and I find it a good opportunity for looking back at the past, what we've done so far and how we feel. Listening to this mix which explored the situation of solitude as a faint narrative background, I found it strangely accurate for the present times. I was always interested in rhythms and the process of catharsis, this year I also rediscovered how blues hold this same power. Beyond the harsh socio-economic conditions resulting from slavery it describes, it is also an outlet to sublimate the wanderings of the human soul.
At times, delving into our wanderings does not necessarily need to be seen as an expression of pure hopelessness but rather of the complex landscape of human emotions and experiences. One has to know their shadow to know thyself. As Eartha Kitt recites in the conclusion of this mix, in her rendition of All by Myself / Beautiful at Forty : "The taste of life has not been so bad / Between the tears and joys I've had / For with some good and a little singing / She always allowed me to get up again".
In the present days I find much hope for possible future positive developments in the fact that I see awareness raising around many social issues, and concepts such as community, solidarity, love, kindness or empathy infiltrating our collective consciousness, becoming increasingly part of a common vocabulary that is more widely used."

Honoring the heartening, cold, clear new moon in Aquarius and the changing seasons of our listening, we here at AW/OA could not be more touched to be able to present this beautiful, long-overdue 'holiday' mix from Denver's H Lite. 

Anton Krueger, the human within H Lite and one half of Singularity Boys is an incredible, buoyant creative life force and a prolific, playful (prolifically playful, playfully prolific) artist. His release on AW/OA, 'Green Youth Heattech' remains a high watermark of achievement among the humble offerings of our wayward imprint, and his new release on Denver's Multidim records exceeds GYHT in the depth of the sonic ideas it explores and the refinement of the technical wizardry it employs.

Believe. No matter the extent of the duress, or the length of the dark nights of our tender, brilliant souls, believe in the possibility of a better future for all. Believe in yourself. Believe In Winter.
