@dcefx has collected various genres of dance music over the years and the first memories of
buying vinyl were in 1994.
Although very young he was hanging around with an older crowd on his estate in South West
London where he grew up, this is how Dan got into listening to pirate radio, like many others
growing up in this era with similar backgrounds. DC was always listening to one of the many
pirate stations like Don, Flex, Girls, Freek, Ice, Dream and Kool FM. One of the friends in
his circle was around 5 years older and knew a bit about DJing and record shops.
In the late 90s after discovering and shopping at Uptown Records in Soho, DC decided to
pluck up the courage and ask if he could do his work experience there while at high school.
Uptown luckily agreed and he did two weeks there which gave an insight to the shop game,
and a couple of years later they called and offered a full time role which he accepted straight
away. DC then went on to work there for five years from the year 2000 and broadened his
knowledge about the many genres on the racks and building relationships with the
community of people that came in.
