"Go" was interesting to write because it was inspired by a friend of mine who had been going through a fairly abusive relationship, and while it was supposed to be about her, it really wound up being about me. During the worst times of this situation, she often turned to me for advice, comfort, and as an outlet to vent. I found myself becoming emotionally involved with the situation, and, therefore, with her.     

The first verse was geared more towards writing from her perspective. I was trying to place myself in her shoes, and tell her side of the story. I accessed the feelings of desperation, depression, and reoccurring rejection that I’m familiar with. I thought of the struggle we go through when we’re fighting for someone or something that won’t fight for us, and wanted to try to capture that struggle in a song.    

However, as the writing process continued, so did our involvements. I found myself interested in someone who was clearly, abundantly interested in someone else. While I knew I was the far better of the two options, she clung to someone that repeatedly ignored, hurt, and abandoned her. This touched on a common issue for me, the feeling that our outcomes do not necessarily reflect our efforts. It made me feel the floating feeling I often do, and I became angry. That was where the second verse was derived from. I felt a juxtaposition of myself and this girl. I had now become the one vying for attention, and not having it properly reciprocated. I was the one reaching out. I was the one trying. I was the one feeling ignored.    

Go embodies that feeling. Not solely romantically, but in all things we do. Our work, our passion, and our love. The feeling that we can try so hard, and invest so much of ourselves, and never receive that which we know we deserve. It’s about wondering if you’re enough, and knowing you’re enough, and how others sometimes make us do a little of both.
