WAIFU with UDENYORAI @ The Lot Radio 11-12-2023

This is a mix I previously uploaded on NTS, made entirely from Balinese gamelan recordings. sourced by all the sounds from Balinese gamelan cassette tapes that I personally collected in Bali. I digitized the recordings and built the mix entirely from them.

I’m still getting great feedback on it, so I’m re-uploading it in high-quality WAV format.

The first part of the mix features recordings from Insitu Recordings, a label that introduces young gamelan musicians in Bali. These were recorded in the 2010s. Midway through, the mix transitions to a gamelan orchestra performance of unknown performers and an undated recording. The piece being played is Gong Kebyar, one of the most frequently performed gamelan compositions, which tells the story of Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and arts, similar to Benzaiten in Japan.

Following that is Guguritan, a style of gamelan-based storytelling primarily performed by two male singers. One sings the narrative in Balinese, while the other provides explanations as the story unfolds.

The mix closes with the soothing sounds of Rindik, a bamboo gamelan instrument known for its warm, relaxing tones.

By the way, since none of these recordings were made in a studio, most were captured outdoors. That means you might occasionally hear birds chirping or even dogs barking in the background—giving it a raw, field recording feel

Zeu5 is a DJ, music producer and live performer from Poland, immersed in the sounds of Deep House, Dub Techno and Deep Tech. A passionate vinyl enthusiast, he’s known for soulful selections and hypnotic grooves. He also embraces progressive and classic styles of house, as well as techno, weaving them into his sets in a thoughtful and unconventional way. His productions have been released on labels such as Crossfade Sounds, Gentleman Music, Otake Records, Runa Records, Routless Records, and Vidno Airlines – with several of these also appearing on vinyl, making them especially aligned with his sonic philosophy and aesthetic. Zeu5 has performed at numerous clubs across Poland, including in Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań, Toruń, at the Uszanowanko Festival in Kraków, and at Audiobar in Płock, his hometown. Since 2021, he has also been producing and performing downtempo music under the alias Organica, and since 2022, he’s been part of the Polish DJ podcast collective Stimmulus. His YouTube channel, followed by tens of thousands of subscribers, is home to his original DJ set series: Pure Vinyl Set, Good Vibes Only, and the exploratory Zeu5 Explores – all serving as a space to build musical narratives and share emotions through sound.

Earlier in 2025, Wevie Stonder returned to Skam with their first album in 16 years, and such an occasion requires further celebration, no? Sure Beats Living delivers more of the collective’s signature cheekiness, and this mix for Bleep unravels all of the wildly eclectic sounds and styles that have powered over two decades of iconoclasm.

This is probably the only mix you’ll find that travels from drill and bass to Ecuadorian synth cumbia to 40s jazz. Constant stylistic U-turns are the name of the game, and as the group recontextualise tracks with comedic skits and spoken word pieces, you never know which little sonic nugget is going to be the jumping off point for a completely opposite yet cleverly connected world of sound. Wevie Stonder’s own strange crossing between avant experimentation and punkish irreverence sits between the jangling bass guitar of Gary Le Strange, whose reclusive hikikomori-induced paranoia is delivered in an ironic nasally britpop voice, and the wonky synth funk of Devonwho with lush crisp beats and thrumming jazzy keys.

Bucolic Moog wash and lounge piano tiptoe beneath a Radiophonic Workshop-esque segment testing out the possibilities of synthesisers; “Finally, an example of rhythmic electronic music,” says the posh presenter, introducing a full and proper rinsing with some classic Squarepusher chops. Amen breaks are chucked in the shredder and glued back together with thick jungle bass, then dissipate into Hiroshi Yoshimura’s birdsong bliss. With these disparate tracklist transitions, each track in itself brings together unlikely combinations: further melodrama from Gary Le Strange pairs southern crooning with jaunty harpsichord, bass punches and cascading pianos flow between J Dilla’s slow hip hop hits, and Polibio Mayorga merges accordion and cowbells with the theatrics of expressively vintage synth sounds, brass and electronics trading lines on ‘Muñequita Blanca’.

The almighty Buraka Som Sistema join the Upper Cuts free download series on a mission to give the world yet another musical genre to dance to. The tropical downtempo madness of first 15 minutes of their now legendary Boiler Room set marked the introduction of Zouk Bass, a brand new tropical hybrid born from the meeting of the French Antillan rhythms of zouk - and its Lusophone relative kizomba - with the bass-heavy styles of the UK underground. 

Zouk Flute is the name of the track that brings the slow and sexy zouk rhythms to the 21st century clubs. A mischievous and downright hypnotic melody instantly puts you in the mood for dancing in dimly lit rooms, giving the style's tropical heritage a dangerous modern edge. While the charming synths reel you in, the heavy slow-paced beats and thick sub-bass pressure promise to keep you nailed to the dancefloor, ocasionally breaking the spell to ask the DJ for yet another rewind. 

As it happened all those years ago with the fast-paced Angolan rhythms of kuduro, yet another tropical revolution in electronic dance music can be traced back to Buraka Som Sistema's studio. While the beats radically change this time around, the need to make people dance their troubles away stays the same. Because dancing is always the best remedy, why not do it a bit slower?
