Shades of Rust is a 5-piece soul rock band from New England that creates music ranging from acoustic ballads to power rock anthems about the power of freedom, love to rise above the human condition. Shades of Rust is singer/songwriter, Tom Schena (vox, acoustic guitar), Shane Mountain (bass), Alexx Morrison (percussion), Mark Edgerly (electric, lead guitar) and Stephen Poole (rhythm guitar).

There are two things in life: Certainties, and uncertainties. Often certainties are forged from the ashes of uncertainties, and well, uncertainties are, at times, born from things we were once certain about. The ultimate truth, (in conclusion) is this: The world works in mysterious ways.  

Shades of Rust come to us as a direct product of the aforementioned sentiment. 

What is Shades of Rust? Well, on the surface, it’s a band. A band steeped in the tradition of noted musical influence(s). It’s part Kris Kristofferson and his beautiful songwriting, which to this day remains true as some of the best literary compositions in the world of folk, and country music. It’s part Gram Parsons for being a founding member of the country-folk movement in the early 70’s. While we’re at it, let’s toss Waylon Jennings on the heap for his favored middle finger figure-of-speech in regards to his dealings with record companies. And of course, there’s Jim Croce for his beloved ballads, and to always remind us that – here’s the concurrent theme – nothing is certain, and having talent and success does not guarantee you anything.

Shades of Rust is life. It’s present in the stumbles and flat out falls we take along the path of each of our own existences. It’s the things we know that we can never change, and really, why should we? Beauty is found in flaws. Beauty is found in the aging process and what scars we pick up along the way. There are stories in those scars. At the end of the day, we build conclusions in our own unique ways. That’s the beauty of being human. If nothing else, learn that a walk through an old junkyard can teach you some beautiful things.

From the band perspective Shades of Rust was born out of the musical vision of songwriter Tom Schena. However uncertain he was that he even wanted a band remains unclear. What is certain is that Shades of Rust are here to give it a fair shot, and hopefully, with a bit of luck, they’re here to stay. Bringing differing degrees of rust to the collective whole are: Shane Mountain (bass), Mark Edgerly (lead guitar), Stephen Poole (rhythm guitar) and Alex Morrison (drums).

We live and die with our memories. In this fast-paced world it’s hard to create concrete memories. That’s not a positive thing. We’re all on information overdrive. But the voice that comes out this young man’s mouth is one that will stop you right in your tracks. Like all the “first-time” memories that humans hold in such high regard, you will remember the first time you hear Tom Schena sing. You will remember the exact moment, and the exact place that he prompts your attention. He’s not going to ask you for it, it’s just going to happen – Organically. That’s the mark of true talent. Vivid only begins to describe the story you’ll tell for the rest of your life out of this beautiful rouse. That is a certainty. 

Shades of Rust are his full-bodied realization that good things permeate out of people that genuinely care about offering something worth producing. Out of the attitude that good things can, and will come to good people. The uncertainty of success always lingers in any group of musicians’ lives, but the assurance of crafting and conspiring over good music is very evident in this Shade of Rust. That is a certainty.
