The fifth offering on Shadow Sanctuary comes in the form of Violent Romance and Gav Memnos' Shapes EP.  Ardently crafted after a spate of late night studio sessions, it's clear from this, their first collaboration, that a natural synergy has arisen instantaneously between the pair. As a result, three solid and original house cuts form the basis of this release.

The first of our remixers comes in the form of the somewhat mysterious Moodtrap. After showcasing their trademark classic House sound with a string of excellent releases on Tsuba records it made perfect sense to enlist their services for Shadow Sanctuary and the resulting take on 'Keep on Changing' certainly does not disappoint.

Last but by no means least we see the return of engineer come rising talent Michael Jansons. It's evident the effort Michael has been putting into his own endeavours of late is more than paying off as he delivers not one but two banging remixes.

Continuing along a path for sourcing fresh talent, Shadow Sanctuary brings you Nist.  After previous collaborations with Elijah Collins and Eric Volta, his first solo release comes in the form of a two track EP with a remix from label boss: Dexter Kane.  As the title of the EP suggests, these tracks both give not only a nod, but also a fist bump and a slap on the arse to Hip Hop of yesteryear.   Brazen use of a sampler and some classic drum machine grooves merge the gap between styles perfectly.

Dexter's mix ups the tempo a little with a bit of an analogue work out.  A scattering of stabs and licks dance round a tight, groove lead rhythm section.

Embracing the idea of natural progression, Dexter Kane returns with 2 new cuts and a fresh outlook on his sound. The first Shadow Sanctuary release of 2014 takes the form of a two track EP featuring remixes from Todd Bodine and Owen Howells. Despite their differences in style, the two original tracks are both set to cause damage. 'Subzilla', as it's name suggests, is a bass and groove lead affair, endlessly rolling as it switches between a host of incidental trickery. 'Is it', although also groove lead to an extent, relies more on an emotive lead hook and a scatter of analogue tones.

Supplying the first of our two remixes is Highgrade Records boss: Todd Bodine. Part of the furniture of Berlin since the fall of the wall, Todd cut his teeth as a resident at Tresor and continues to feature at the cities seminal spots such as Panorama Bar, Watergate and KaterHolzig on a regular basis. On this occasion Todd drops us a no-nonsense slab of techno, perfectly capturing the sound of him, his label and his city.

The second remix comes from good friend and rising talent Owen Howells. One of the team behind Shades Recordings, Owen has spent a sizeable chunk the past 12 months on the road, with appearances in North America, Berlin, Japan and ultimately a permanent move to Australia to open a record shop. With this in mind we're feeling fortunate to have tied him down. Despite instinctively transcending the barriers between house and techno, Owen remains loyal to the original composition, all the while reworking the arrangement into a series of emphatic, hi-hat heavy crescendos, a perfect end to a solid package.

A close attention to groove and a liberal use of analogue tones is a running theme throughout, making for a package that is both varied and infectious in equal measure.

A new year beckons and so does the ninth release on Shadow Sanctuary.  This instalment sees label boss Dexter Kane drop a couple of original tracks combined with two well crafted remixes from Kindimmer.

The title track: Hit Rewind is an upbeat affair.  Rolling bass, organic percussion and a rambling vocal sample from an obscure Inspectah Deck interview proceed a more stripped back section where a host of different fills and licks skip effortlessly around the groove.  As it's name suggests, 303 'til Infinity is a somewhat of an ode to Roland's famous bass module, a healthy slice of acid house, also featuring more than it's fair share of 707, 808, and 909.

Originally hailing from Greece, Berlin based Kindimmer is certainly one to watch.  His unique brand of house and techno has enabled him to sign tracks to the likes of Poker Flat, 2020 Vision, Resopal Schallware and Local Talk.  In this case he has delivered two remixes both of which deliver a more percussive dimension to Hit Rewind. His trademark style of big kicks, retro chords and heavily swung percussion shines through on both versions, a perfect addition to the package.

Following their well crafted remix of Niko Maxen's 'Whistle N' Flute', Shadow Sanctuary is proud to introduce a full EP from Leeds based newcomers and self proclaimed 'space voyagers' Twenty2.  Individually known as Will Crawshaw and Secondself, the pair have notched up an impressive run of signings since their debut release earlier in the year on labels such as: Madtech, Nurvous and Resonance.  

The title track 'Poltergeist' is a tale of two halves.  It starts it's life as a groove based affair: punchy beats and a playful bassline underlay sporadic stabs and a chopped vocal.  As the arrangement unfolds, darker forces come into play: sinister brass and an erie build up create the perfect juxtaposition.  Whilst maintaining an inauspicious air, 'Troubled' takes a more percussive course. Subtle atmospherics preside over off beat kicks and skippy beats, before shadowy synths and ghostly vocals bring it to it's natural peak.  Finally label boss Dexter Kane drops his take on 'Poltergeist'.  Whilst keeping one eye very much on the original, he strips it back and plumps it up for a more peak time offering.

SS001 Dexter Kane – The Craft / Beta Blocker

The debut release on new label Shadow Sanctuary is the first of three E.P's from label boss Dexter Kane.  As you'd expect, part of the label's ethos is showcasing his own music, so the first in a trilogy of releases from the man himself is somewhat of a fitting start.  The Craft and Beta Blocker could be described as synth heavy deep house; dark, melodic and hypnotic yet primed and ready the  dancefloor.  On remix duty is Leftroom and Air London's Sam Russo.  Keeping things deep, his version of The Craft takes more of a techy route, with a healthy dose of acid and dark pads dominating the soundscape.

Shadow Sanctuary skipper Dexter Kane and Gabriel BR's paths have crossed many times over the years in Gabriel's home country of Brazil. On this occasion, Gabriel jumped in Dexter's ride to a gig and made sure to play his demo full whack on the car stereo; the rest, as they say, is history.

Something a little outside Shadow Sanctuary's usual remit is on offer here as the Cosmic Funk EP includes elements of breaks, funk and deep melody. Dexter gives more than a casual nod to UK garage on his minimal roller of a remix.
