Funk Club, Friday night Zona Maco Feb 2026 in Mexico City. 

This set is the start of the night, an extended opener that I played before Francesco Farfa on Friday night from 11-1:30 am. As Art Week (Zona Maco) has gotten busier and more populated .. I've found myself drawn to playing in more obscure moments while larger, commercial events are happening to have the best chance to work with a musically committed dance floor. When Adrian offered me this slot, it fit this idea perfectly. 

It was an honor to play before Francesco, one of dance music's purest and longest practicing selectors and the mentor and teacher to many other passionate diggers, notably including Francesco Del Garda. Farfa’s music has been called everything from psychedelic techno to cyber-trance, but it is impossible to truly define, with Farfa instead going in whatever direction his heart takes him. For this gig, I played only records I'd found in the weeks before while digging in Japan or in the last days in Berlin before the tour that also fit this brief and worked to construct an opening narrative that consistently built dance floor energy while staying playful and open with the groove to give Francesco the freedom to play as broadly as he felt as well. It was a unique challenge that I enjoyed. 

Closing my set with a full and present dance floor with a recent gift from another Farfa influenced Italian artist that I've gotten to know in Berlin felt perfect, a track that is as genre bending as any but that manages to connect the dots between my childhood in New York, via Biggie Smalls, Francesco's roots with Funk and R&B, three generations of Mtume's original Juicy instrumental bassline, and Farfa's legacy and influence  on the producer of this track and the label that released it. All underscored by my own learning and exploration since moving to Berlin. This was as good a needle in the haystack moment as I've come across in some time. 

Of course, none of this matters over the feeling of the track on the floor. I don't aspire to perfection but I do focus on doing my absolute best to maintain the flow of music for the dance floor, and after a slightly bumpy mix but with a quick recovery and a vulnerable moment for me, the stars and groove aligned, a warm round of applause came from the floor and I pulled out my headphones and turned around in the booth to Francesco's warm smile and a thank you and knowing acknowledgement for the track, and it made it all worth it that much more.

The closing weekend of the winter tour I played two shows in California, both with my dear friend, mentor, and touring partner from last year, Maayan Nidam. Maayan should not need an introduction, she is one of the best artists of our generation. Any moments shared are a special opportunity. We joined Torie and Jessica Stanell for a Valentine's Day celebration in an underground space in Oakland, CA with impeccable sound. This set was played by me from approx 1:30-4am, also exclusively from records found in Japan this tour. So many layers of memories in this space and with the humans there made it one of my most special experiences sharing music, perhaps ever. Happy to share these moments for posterity and hopefully, your pleasure as well. If you were there, then you know. ❤️

Justin Shaffer is a vinyl DJ and multidisciplinary artist. 

He plays elegant, groove-driven, dance music that inspires movement and is a lover of the dance floor and all it represents. 

Born and raised in New York City, he now calls Berlin home. Prior chapters in Seattle and Bretagne, and a thread that still runs through San Francisco. 

His influences include the bittersweet tail of the pre-Giuliani NYC club scene, the Detroit/Berlin axis, and the relationship between contemporary classical and electronic music. 

He is also a sailor, photographer, and audio engineer.
