Poet, author, farmer, activist, and Buddhist scholar, Gary Snyder ’51 has published numerous collections of poetry and prose. A literature and anthropology major at Reed, Snyder was instrumental in the Beat Generation and San Francisco poetry movements of the ’50s and ’60s. He studied linguistics and anthropology at Indiana University and East Asian languages at the University of California at Berkeley. From 1956 to 1968, he lived and studied in Kyoto, Japan. Snyder is an emeritus professor of the University of California at Davis. He has worked with a broad range of artists, scientists, environmentalists, and public policy specialists in dealing with the problems of nature and the wild in the global economy. His work has received the Pulitzer Prize, the Bollingen Prize for Poetry, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the International Award from the Buddhist Transmission Foundation. He is a member of the National Academy of Arts and Letters and once served on the California Arts Council. Snyder was a keynote speaker at the Watershed conference on literature and the environment in Washington, D.C., and was the subject of the documentary The Practice of the Wild. He lives on a mountain farmstead in the Northern Sierra of California.

This talk by long-time art critic for "The New Yorker" Peter Schjeldahl was presented on April 7, 2005, as part of SFMOMA’s Phyllis Wattis Distinguished Lecture Series in conjunction with the exhibition "Robert Bechtle: A Retrospective." Reflecting on Bechtle's use of photographs as the basis for his paintings, Schjeldahl remarks: "he takes something that has absolutely no intention—the light that hits a piece of film—and makes it be on purpose, specifies it and takes it visually to a level that you can’t get to in a photo." Schjeldahl also offers poetic meditations on the implications of photorealism, parallels between Bechtle's work and that of American realist painter Edward Hopper, and the place of painting in the history of narrative.

Public Programs Archive: Peter Schjeldahl: The Story of the Image (April 7, 2005)

We don't have metrics to measure what happens when we read something that changes our life. So this episode is an attempt to deal with that.  We begin with writer Rob Walker who tells us about his "New Old Thing,"  a regular feature he produces for Yahoo Tech. Rob is one of the most thoughtful writers I know and if anyone can wean us from our addiction to the now it will be him. I also get to talk to one of my heros this week: Edwin Frank who is the editor in chief of the NYRB classics imprint. About 10 years ago I read a collection of Platonov stories, a book that definitely changed my life, and I became a life-long devotee of the series. I have always wanted to ask Edwin about his editorial sensibilities and what exactly binds all the books with the well designed colored spines together. Phyllis Rose is the author of The Shelf.  She "randomly" chose a shelf at the library near her house and read every book on it - then she wrote about the experience. It is a deep funny philosophical treatise on the act of reading itself. I will be gifting this book to my friends for years.

On November 11, 2014 artist Luis Camnitzer visited the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign's School of Art and Design. He was invited to speak on his work as part of the AGENCY themed Visiting Artist Lecture Series. Camnitzer delivered the lecture--not about his work--instead as a work in and of itself. Reflecting on the recent controversial firing of Professor Steven Salaita by the UIUC, Camnitzer wove together a nuanced, yet poignant, argument that brought together education, art, art education, and the way that we live and communicate. Camnitzer was introduced by Assistant Professor of Art Education, Jorge Lucero and the lecture was followed by a brief Q & A moment.

Contemporary art has boomed since the late 1980s. The period’s key art productions have clustered around spectacular, expensive new art such as video installation and large colour photography, implying venues able to provide the resources, scale and public prominence required by these works. APT 1, in 1993, had been designed to discard divisions between artists’ nationalities and to showcase the diversity, correlations and tensions between art practices across Asia and the Pacific, but its achievement was to legitimate this art as globally contemporary rather than national—and thus to extrapolate regional definitions of the contemporary.
Dr Charles Green is Associate Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Melbourne and has a PhD from the University of Melbourne. He is also an artist, working collaboratively with Lyndell Brown.

John Jennings is an Associate Professor of Art and Visual Studies at the University at Buffalo-State University of New York. He is the co-author of the graphic novel The Hole: Consumer Culture, Vol. 1 and the art collection Black Comix: African American Independent Comics Art and Culture (both with Damian Duffy). Jennings is also the co-editor of The Blacker the Ink: Constructions of Black Identity in Comics and Sequential Art and co-founder/organizer of The Schomburg Center’s Black Comic Book Festival in Harlem, MLK NorCal’s Black Comix Arts Festival in San Francisco, and the AstroBlackness colloquium in Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University. Jennings’ current comics projects include the Hiphop adventure comic Kid Code: Channel Zero, the supernatural crime noir story Blue Hand Mojo, and the upcoming graphic novel adaptation of Octavia Butler’s classic dark fantasy novel Kindred.

Mark Dion – Talk at Mildred’s Lane 28th July, 2012

Introduced by Marissa Benedict, Mildred’s Lane Fellow on The Alchemist’s Shack II and recipient of the Sisters Crow Adept Scholarship Fund, this talk by Mark Dion covers some of his “botanically-related” projects including Systema Metropolis (2007) and his recent commission for Documenta 13 (2012).

Systema Metropolis (2007) takes its name from Carl Von Linnaeus’s Systema Naturae (1735) - a founding text in the history of zoological and botanic nomenclature as it introduced the Linnaean system of classification to the natural world. Whilst Linnaeus’ task was to unearth and fix a taxonomy of biological life for the entire universe Systema Metropolis aimed - through collaborations between Dion and the Natural History Museum in London -  to explore a taxonomy of biological life in the microcosmic universe of the city of London.  Systema Metropolis used both traditional Linnaen approaches of comparative anatomy and contemporary systematic methodologies (which often involve grinding down a specimen to analyse its DNA structure) in order to analyse, categorize and present the project’s findings. 

The second project Dion describes – his commissioned piece for Documenta 13 - embarked from the legacy of another important figure from the history of zoology and botanical taxonomy: Carl Schildbach and his dioramic zylotech books (which Dion first came across in the natural history museum in Kassel during a break from Documenta 10). These books, originally made for the Gentry collectors of the time, were intended as an alternative to the pressed plant herbariums of the time and each book intended as a literal embodiment the tree which it represented. For Documenta 13 Dion set out on a similar project of creating zylotech books which would represent the trees of the different continents he was working across. The final work presented a complex portrait of shifting nature as well as a critique of taxonomy as a conditioned (and subjective) system of knowledge which codifies and classifies the world, dividing nature into discrete groups as a basis for typology and understanding.

Recorded on location in the barn at Mildred’s Lane, Pennsylvania the talk is punctuated by the chitter of cicadas, the infrequent pop of a beer bottle and the occasional bat squeek.
