Shahmaran are a new Brisbane-based 3-piece world music fusion ensemble specialising in the performance genre of predominantly Turkish funk, groove, folk, and gypsy dance music. The word “Shahmaran” comes from Turkish folklore, being a mythical creature with the body of half-woman, half-snake. She was said to be queen of the snakes and renown for her wisdom and peaceful agenda. 
The band is made up of members recently arrived from Turkey: Seçkin Süerdem - guitar, vocals; Eren Yoltay - saz: a traditional string-instrument, vocals (both from “Istanbul Gypsy Groove”); and Brisbane resident Ben Keogh on drums and percussion. Much of the group’s pieces are covers instantly recognisable to most Turkish ex-pats, invoking feelings of emotion and nostalgia. Accompanied by Benji’s solid rhythms the performance inspires many to the dance floor and the odd-time and gypsy styles covered provide an opportunity for intellectual contemplation. 
The immediate goal of the band is to play as many gigs, festivals, parties and functions as possible over the course of the next year as well as to record an EP for release in the near future.
