"I don't know what I would do if my life was on the line." In a new audio documentary, female Iranian musicians reflect on the implications of speaking out against the country's misogynistic regime.

On September 16th, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini—from the northwestern Kurdish city of Saqez—was arrested by Iran's morality police for not wearing her headscarf in accordance with the Islamic Republic's clerical standards. The circumstances of her death were suspicious; while authorities deny beating Amini and insisted in a statement that the cause of death was sudden heart failure, eyewitnesses, including women who were detained with Amini, reported that she was severely beaten and that she died as a result of police brutality. The incident sparked a series of protests described by the media as the most widespread in Iran in almost 10 years. 

In honour of International Women's Day, this week's RA Exchange examines the ongoing fight for women's rights in Iran. At the time of this writing, the situation on the ground has escalated, with the government arresting and killing protestors who have spoken out against the country's oppressive policing practices, and even inciting suspected poison attacks against dozens of schoolgirls in the country's capital. According to our guests, women and minorities face more discrimination than ever as the Islamic Republic continues to extend and entrench its grip over Iranian society. "It is this conflict that has to do with the regulation of women's bodies that has been at the core of the Islamic Republic's main agendas," says one interviewee. "By controlling women, they're also somehow solidifying their power within the society."

RA Exchange's Senior Producer Chloe Lula starts this episode with a reflection on RA staff writer Anu Shukla's news piece from last autumn, which documented the protests when they first erupted, before speaking with Iranian musicians Azin Zahedi, Farahnaz Hatam and a third woman who asked to be removed from this episode for fear of her life. They reflect on the repercussions of the protests, the implications for the Iranian diaspora and how music and art can amplify sociopolitical issues—and galvanise communal action and positive change. Spirit’s 12 minute self-titled track from the 1979 album ‘Put Your Hands Together’ gets an official re-issue on Rain&Shine. Backed with a perfectly edited edit for DJ and dancefloor use, contributed by legends Zaf & Phil Asher. A tough (and expensive) pull destined to never see a re-issue despite years of persuasion by Rain&Shine has finally come together with the blessing of producer Tim Johnson. Spirit was a group from Washington DC that formed after a chance encounter with Ohio Gospel musician Tim Johnson in a carpark on a Saturday morning. Tim had played alongside and opened for great acts including Shirley Caesar, The Ohio Players, The Hawkins Family and The O’Jays to name a few. Tim quickly become the band leader and started writing original songs for the group to perform. Prior to recording ‘Put Your Hands Together’ the band stopped all engagements for 3 months and rehearsed relentlessly. This enabled them to travel back to Peppermint Studios in Ohio and lay down the entire album in a single day! Spirit’s sound was ahead of it’s time, incorporating funk and other secular music to progress the Gospel sound. Tim say’s it a great feeling to see his music being enjoyed on the dancefloor around the globe almost 40 years after it’s original release. His message for the world today is written in another song from ‘Put Your

Hands Together’ (Help Your Fellow Man). “We must learn to help our fellow man and spread a little Joy and Peace all through the land”. Music with a message more relevant now than ever.

Gothenburg based ’Abstrs’ is originally from Stockholm and one of the co-founders and residents of underground collectives Tekla, Obalans and Terror. Abstrs sets combine  distorted industrial sounds with driven acid. He released on Stockholm imprint Street Life Rhythm, as well as Lyon based Lett Records.

STRECK PODCAST 004 | ABSTRS

I was taking over from @d_o_h playing before me, it starts at quite a high intensity without an intro, compared to how I usually want to build-up. But a few tracks in, we start floating down, float float, down the stream.. letting the river show the way.

Just a spontaneous session without a plan, really happy with the progression though. Some new tracks, but mostly ones that I've played quite a lot, but never put together in a story by style like this before. Enjoy y'all!
