2023 is a really special year for me, as I found my voice musically. This mix is a representation of all that I've learned in the journey of finding my voice thus far.

Finding an outlet for my own darkness has helped me heal in so many ways, and I'm glad to be able to share it with others.

Arising from the Midwest’s underground scene under the DJ/producer alias “Shakti” in 2021, multidisciplinary artist, Jes Rai, began creating from a sonic palette through the medium of techno with an ethereally dark, driven, and precisely rhythmic execution. 

Through meticulous curation, her sets blend pulsating bass lines & intricate drum patterns of genres like industrial, electroclash, EBM, IDM, dark-wave, experimental, breakbeats, and DNB.
 Her passion for the underground, the arts, and all that is avant-garde has gained her recognition in playing alongside globally renowned artists, such as DJ T-1000, Myles Serge (AKA Translate,) Terrence Parker, Ernesto, CLB & more...

Starting her journey in 2019 under the stage-name "Prismatic," a more theatrical act, where Jes performed in a guise of a dominatrix in a leather bunny mask. She has also performed under a duo called, “Dark Magicians,” with Dezign.  Quickly realizing that her her passion for techno could not be maintained with the gimmick,  she reinvented her solo-artist project  as, “Shakti,” a word meaning, “power,” “creative energy,” “or “divine feminine energy” in Hindi.  No stranger to the underground, Jes entered the realm of underground music in 2010 & served as an art director, founder and/or resident of several electronic music collectives and venues, from “Modul8,” “Ritual Collective,” “Create or Die,” & “Freeman Guild.”  Her work has spanned from underground events  to galleries to large scale festivals such as Movement & Electric Forest.

Based in Grand Rapids, MI, Jes draws inspiration from the two cities she is located in between- her hometown of Chicago, the birthplace of house & the birthplace of techno, Detroit. 

Growing up in Chicago, she was influenced heavily by a club scene dominated by trance and deep house. She spent her youth as a classically and jazz trained musician, who had the honor to co-conduct at a young age for the Chicago Junior Symphony, and found her self inspired by the sound of the city. 
After moving to Michigan, she became involved in the underground music scene, and began playing in post-punk and metal bands.  Currently, Shakti is working on creating her first compilation which will be released sometime in 2024.
