Canadian born and Naarm (Melbourne) based Jennifer Loveless returns one year on from her debut release Hard/Soft (Pure Space Records) with Water, a 12” EP presented by Butter Sessions. Bestowing us with five tracks of dystopian dance-floor thump, Water is a bustling showcase of Jenn’s breadth as an artist. Reflecting on the contrast of Water with her first EP, Loveless comments “I wanted a hard contrast to the Hard/Soft release. I always had a plan to release an energetic frivolous fun type EP after Hard/Soft. I had a feeling people might see me as an ambient producer (although I wouldn’t really categorise Hard/Soft as that), and I guess this EP, Water, is my response”.

At its core, Water is a hyper-charged cetacean maelstrom of electronic music, sampling weddell seals, humpback whales, pacific walruses and water itself. Water kicks off with the rumbling patter of Out/Under before moving into the unabating Syzygy (Scissor Me). Jenn stamps a joyful yet skittish imprint onto ECC, while fly on the wall Backroll Buddy sits on a sound bed of audio Jenn recorded at parties, capturing friends chattering and an edit of a Whitney Houston earworm she heard a DJ playing, paying ode to a night out. B L U YOU is a charming endnote; a fusion of fluorescent pop and a catchy bassline. The verdict here is that Water allows Jennifer Loveless to prove herself truly as a jack of all trades. Water takes shape as an engrossing palette of bold dance music.

New Wave Podcast 039: Donny Rotten

South London based artist David Pink who plays under the alias Donny Rotten is forever experimenting with sounds of all shades. Primarily known for his glistening disco-funk and old school French inspired house tracks, however his recent explorations have seen him revisit a more industrial and break beat infused sound which was his entry point into electronic music. Over the past year, the video content he released on social media showcasing his experimental and creative approach to his production has allowed him to reach new heights and further grow his brand. 

Music was something that David grasped at a young age, gaining experience on the guitar and even venturing into a very short-lived signing phase. This transitioned into hip-hop and jungle in his teens, which is still prevalent in his music today. David has built up what he tells us is an overwhelming amount of material, ideas and musical threads, which has allowed him to be so adventurous when creating his music. Quite refreshingly he shares his creative processes on social media, displaying how he chops and sample his records.

It was an honour to have an artist so musically gifted as David on New Wave, his drive and work ethic is second to none and we foresee his stock continuing to rise over the next year. We recently caught up with David to discuss his musical roots, the Indie band he was part of in his teens, living in Bristol and what keeps his tracks authentic.

Walking into the Unknown

For Hotseat Recordings’ second release, Trans-Neptunian Orbit has stepped up with a 3 track, Electro influenced masterclass EP. Trans-Neptunian Orbit joined the Hotseat Family for our first release, with the contribution of “10 Years From Now” which was incredibly well received. 

This EP is a concept expressing the emotions felt when frantically searching through space for new human life forms. “Journey To The Unknown” & “Warp Speed” perfectly capture the excitement of the unknown. The third and final track “No Sign of Life'', is an atmospheric & melancholic trip that conveys the emotions of finding no more than barren wastelands on the “Journey to the Unknown”.
Trans-Neptunian OrbitIrish born Maurice Anthony Moran is a Berlin-based artist captivated in the sound of electro and anything in between, from techno to breaks to IDM. Influences to Maurice’s sound pallet go back as far as Kraftwerk but most notably from Detroit electro kingpins Drexciya. 

Maurice started DJing in 2016 at Bray Institute of Further Education on the DJ techniques and music production course taught by Sunil Sharpe. During this time Maurice developed his skills as a DJ and began the learning process for production. Over the years Maurice had the privilege to play alongside the likes of Alienata, AIROD, The Exaltics, Radial and Umwelt, while playing the closing set for Fuinneamh festival in 2017.

In order to expand his artistic reach, Maurice chose to wield 3 aliases. His main artistic identity is Maurice Anthony Moran but he has two accompanying aliases, Patient 808 and Trans-Neptunian Orbit. Patient 808 is a concept piece based in a post-apocalyptic world annihilated by an airborne virus, with fast-paced dark electro and techno the main focal point. For Maurice’s concepts based around space and time, he uses the alias Trans-Neptunian Orbit. The sound pallet includes fast-paced electro breaks with glitchy sound effects accompanied by acid basslines and soul drenching harmonies. Anything outside these sound brackets is released under Maurice's main musical identity, Maurice Anthony Moran.
