Following his 2022 ‘Natural Selection’ EP and music on Comma Trax, Troubleshoot Recordings, and Draconian Audio, Scaefa returns to La bonne musique with three nostalgic club cuts. The London party and label has built a roster of talent comprised of artists like Sempra, Small Crab and Akumen, with a catalogue of quality rave music spanning techno, bass, and breaks. “I spent a lot of time listening to 90s trance and UK jungle/hardcore pirate radio mixes whilst making these tunes, and the result is an amalgam of breaks/techno/trance and ambient moments. This project is nostalgic musically and emotionally, with the tracks made in a period of my life spent looking back/reflecting on the past. I find the music to be both euphoric and melancholic at times.” - Scaefa ‘Symbiosis’ opens up Scaefa’s ‘Ambrosia’ EP with mysterious swirling synths, anticipation building before culminating into a racy Reese bass finish, this is before ‘Locate’ continues with more breakbeats which carefully carve and slice their way through rich melodies and vibrant stabs. 

The title track is up next, pads swelling in the background as pitched-up vocals and a subtle 303 complement its fast-paced jungle drums. La bonne musique co-founder n_o, formerly known as bad internet, closes out the release, turning ‘Locate’ into a retro acid techno and house hybrid complete with exhilarating stabs and organic rhythm.

Andy Garvey - Process

The lights flashed on suddenly inside the small basement, leaving dancers squinting underneath their glare. Signalling the end of the night, bodies swarmed towards the exit, making their way out into the street and into the early morning light. Huddling together, in hushed tones they began discussing their next movements, the night wouldn't be ending here. 

Warsaw-based label Ziema, the Polish for Earth, began life in March last year with an EP from label bosses Bartosz Kruczyñski (Earth Trax), Adam Brocki and Jan Wójcicki (Private Press). A natural extension of their studio in the heart of the Polish capital, the label focuses on positioning itself between the ethereal and the club, with an Eastern European touch. For release number two, the three of them come together once again, capturing different flavours of the club, from raw DJ tools to deeper, ethereal grooves and uplifting pads layered over TR-808 drums.

New Wave Podcast 032: CØSTELLØ

It felt natural that to celebrate New Wave's first birthday that the man behind the scenes finally stepped up to showcase his own story and sound. CØSTELLØ is ever striving to make his next move within the industry and with the launch of this platform last year and his ever-growing skills behind the decks, he has become a regular in his local scene. He is known for his fast cuts, quick and raw mixing, in which he which combines techno from various eras; creating a blistering sound with little time for breaks.

His willingness to learn and absorb knowledge has ensured that he is constantly progressing within the scene. Having experience in events management, artist liaison, DJing and now running a successful platform- in a short space of time he has built up an impressive portfolio of work within the industry. He enjoyed his most productive year in 2020 and progressed significantly as an artist, releasing mixes on Wonderlust Group, Framework and Project Radio. However he even admitted that his desire to make a career through DJing died down, due to the enjoyment from working behind the scenes whilst running New Wave. 

Although primarily pushing a techno driven sound, CØSTELLØ is still an avid digger for all genres of music and used this chance to showcase a very different side to his collection than normal. Stepping into his role of interviewer was one of the members of the New Wave team Jordan Taylor who discussed various topics with CØSTELLØ including; the reason he started New Wave, the first time he stepped behind a pair of decks, running events and future goals within Newcastle.
