Who is @donniemoustaki? Or to give him his full name, Donald Rubertus 'The Don' von Engelbert de Moustaki. We really have no idea, but he is amazing a very nice body of weird and wonky lo-fi-ish jazzy house grooves, such as this beaut on @sengileywax's first (green) vinyl various artists release. It's an intricate odyssey of rough samples, queasy undulation, deep funk and percussive fills that's very tasty indeed.

A straight-up collection of eight fully-juiced grooves; the album hits all the right spots as we’re given a guided tour around Suburb Beat’s deepest, innermost musical psyche. 

Highlights include the sink-fixing, butt-shaking acid funk of ‘Legacy’, the warm, never-ending groove and trippy squiggles of the title track, the crisp drums, bubbling bassline and powerful rising chords of the finale ‘Funky Time’ and the mischievous glitch n’ shuffle sweetness of ‘What U Want’ where a grand familiar vocal sample hits hunger and nostalgia levels. 

And that’s just the half of it. A decade deep into his professional game (and many years studying the craft prior to that), Suburb Beat is levelling up in a major way here and his timing couldn’t be better.

Tilman is back again on the Shall Not Fade Seasons Series imprint. The German producer, who specialises in pumping, jazz-inflected house, brings the positivity of his personality into his music - ‘United Scripts’, his longest release yet, has the sweet sounds of summer interwoven throughout.

The EP sees him moving away from sample-heavy house, although the first track ‘Relax Yourself’ is still a sample-driven house piece that is classic Tilman. In contrast, ‘By All Means’ beautifully showcases his abilities as an instrumentalist - sublime keys that are interspersed with singer Louisa Laos’ R&B vocals. It’s the first time Tilman has worked with a singer, and a standout moment in the record, a song with potential beyond the club. ‘Beauty In The Dark’ uses peaceful flute stabs to contrast with a real deep bassline; somewhat dreamy, but still a danceable roller. The A-side closes with ‘Sound Issue 84’, definitely another dance tool, a tight hi-hat contrasted with dubbed out chords that hypnotise. 

Tilman says ‘Vice Versa’ is “the love song of the EP”. Real classic house vibes on this one; melodic piano that feels totally alluring - something to spark a dancefloor romance. ‘Mercury Hill’ builds into maximalism, a shimmering eclectic collection of sounds. ‘Say Good Bye’ takes a real 90s house approach - it wouldn’t be out of place in the golden Ibiza summers, and leads well into ‘Make You Hot’. The record closing track has a sound that sums up the EP overall: grooving upbeat music built to make you smile. Digital bonus track, ‘Lemon Venom‘, is also a hidden gem...smooth, swinging chords that build up into a glimmering crescendo of plucky melody, it’s a euphoric club heater.

Shall Not Fade’s Season Series imprint hosts Brighton-based DJ and producer Gavinco (Joe Newham) for its first long-play release - Dumont LP; a mellow yet rhythmic collection of jazz house explorations. Gavinco - real name This is his second LP in a year, and blends organic instrumentation with clubby samples. 

Dumont is a polished piece of work, smoothly produced and flowing from song to song imperceptibly like the pianist improvising to entertain punters in an uptown jazz bar. The title track is all swinging, dusty sax scattered with sharp natural keys, although the rough and ready undercurrent suggests something clubbier. It prepares you for the harder ‘Electronic Feeling’ that takes similar jazz stylization but ups the house beat; a bassiness builds into the end of the A-side with ‘Transit’ centring around saxophone loops and elevated percussion that gets hips moving. This is stripped right back for wistful guitar and soulful female vocals in ‘Sweetness’ - ‘Carry On’ acts as a meeting point between this and the danceable rest of the record, summer vibes passing through it as the pulse of house influence builds. Newham plays with Herbie Hancock-style flute trills during ‘Fusion’, vintage funk guitar rising hazily from the rhythm like a mirage. If ‘Fusion’ evokes sun-baked Balearic beaches, ‘Dévouée’ is the gentle tide cooling them, fading chord stabs mirroring placid sax. Digital bonus track ‘Estrella’ carries a layered brass section, building to a euphoric drop - though taking a sound palette from candlelit jazz clubs, this is sunshine music.
