Hitting us with a double LP of sublime dance music lingering on the border of ambience, Interstate is the alter ego of DJ Swagger. Earlier this year, he graced Shall Not Fade’s Time Is Now sub label in collaboration with DJ Ædidias for four feelgood UKG cuts - now returning for the second album in the Seasons Series, expect something a little different. Dominion Swing is his first LP under the Interstate moniker.

The four sides of vinyl hold their fair share of punchy kick drums and funky melodies, though across them is a blissed out ambient softness that comes to the forefront by the end. ‘Doublet Doureet’ is a low end groover driven by skippy percs, the speedy bass melody chilled out with some lingering natural chords. ‘Second Mass’ is futuristic and clean cut, tickling the ear with panning synth stabs and a powerful electro bassline that cuts through the track sharply, giving memories of the dancefloor while perfectly leading into ‘Habitat’ - the sustained ambient shimmer that closes the A side. Onto the reverse side, ‘This Rather Than That’ and ‘Misty’ are glitchy, playful evening music, ‘Misty’ leaning into a fun organ ditty. The almost imperceptible bassline of ‘Two To Get Ready’ hangs in the air giving it a dub atmosphere. More genre exploration is to be found on the C side, from the pulsing but delicate house of ‘Appliance’ to the tranquil guitar-lead journey of ‘Condone The Drama’, ending with a return to blissful, oceanic ambience in ‘Bubblebath’. The closing side of Dominion Swing stays in this vein - blissed out haze is soaked into summer sundowner ‘Ascension’ and its romantic melodies. ‘Stigma’ is built on misty ambient pads but carries a persistent heartbeat rhythm, fading slowly into album closer ‘Yosemite’’s tropical field recordings and scattered drum hits.

Following releases with YAM, Tiff’s Joints, Dr Banana and Touching Bass, artist Romaal Kultan (Ollie Malin) now inaugurates his own record label, Personal Discs.

No Time Like The Future showcases Romaal Kultan’s finest productions, charting a distinct personal trajectory between hiphop, house and broken beat. Opener One Moment Please is a sassy boom bap affair, with an unexpected nod towards jungle. Music Room, made in collaboration with producer Cypriano, is a patient, moody chugger — a tapestry of piano, organic percussion and crackly vinyl samples laced with acid.

On the B-side, Personal Effects delivers a unique, hypnotic broken beat groove, where swelling synths and a twinkling Rhodes meditate together in careful arrangement. Finally, the intimate title track No Time Like the Future stomps off into the sunrise, carried along by a rolling, yearning dreaminess.

Each one of these tracks represents a special, all-too-rare moment of ecstasy in the studio. I hope that this feeling lives on in the music.

Following last years debut on Especial, Alphonse returns with a stand out dance floor bomb of an EP from afro-dub-house to basement breaks, backed by imperious remixes from rising stars The Pilotwings and DJ Normal 4.  

While the techno-breaks-poem Same For Me came with its own soliloquy of life and the transcendental mediations of dance, head-scratching and indifference ensued as the EP, backed with Junior Fairplay's monstrous-amen remix, slipped by all but the most 'switched on' heads - thanks Zaltan!

Now back, but still keeping to the shadows, with more sound system shaking cuts via the afro leaning Smokey and breaks pump of Glint AM. Smokey is a true heir to a unique British take on House. Congas, bongos, kick, dub bass lines and chants riding twisted fx - a true Warriors Dance.  

Next Glint AM takes things back. Skipping hats atop an 808 throb before Detroit inspired strings and Akai vocals await a Mayday bass to lift hands and hearts. This is no pastiche but born of life's love and experience, of misty mornings, standing on beaten up trucks, arms a lot, higher and higher.

Time then to hand remixing duties to rising brothers from other mothers. The Pilotwings retake of Smokey shows a crew at the height of their powers, stripping the beats back to allow time and space to ascend - letting it all float away. Things are closed by "one to watch" DJ Normal 4. An old head at heart, member of Cologne's Aiwo Records and name to check, his deeper take on Glint AM includes a nod to the atmospherics of Biosphere and Leiner while keeping things, always, always, always...looking to the future.

Hard Beach Entertainment is back, stirring up more memories of Detroit and the Midwest. Lauded offerings of electro, breaks, ghettotech and hard house have earned the Parisian label a plenty of attention recently and now they return with some sombre programming, this time more in the vein of Drexciya than Deeon.

We find ourselves in eerie and familiar terrain. The EP layers foggy, melancholic pads and subtle synth motifs over unrelenting, precision-clipped drum machines, rendering something akin to the most naval gazing of the Sheffield Bleep movement or perhaps a subdued Detroit In Effect. Exhibiting the tone perfectly for us here is 'M104', featuring in some capacity the brilliant, genre-mashing S.O.N.S – perhaps tweaking production, perhaps simply laying down sinister vocals. For fans of electro and nostalgia.

Secretsundaze continue their quest to uncover amazing new music with the signing of exciting young Dominican artist Boundary. At just 19 years old Boundary aka Josué Suero makes music that is brimming full of ideas and influences that belie his young age.

The four track ‘Interlazados’ EP showcases Boundary’s melodic sensibilities and ear for a killer rhythm. You could listen to the tracks on this EP and be mistaken for thinking this is an artist who has maybe been lost in the throes of extended Villalobos DJ set or the deep pads of old Sun Electric records, but as an artist who is an outsider to the European dance scene, his inspiration comes from closer to home.

As Boundary explains, these comes from a fascination with video game music, his first real gateway to electronic music:

“For this EP I was interested to see if I could hit close to the feelings I have when I listen to certain video game music, how I could convey the amazing and deep storytelling in these songs. I really wanted them to feel like a ride/adventure. ‘Opticamente Avanzando’ (‘Optically Advancing’ in English) for me is like a venture into a machine that analyses a bunch of electronic music genres and it outputs as many different variations of these genres it can, each with their own little quirk/details, creating something unique in the process.”

You can definitely hear these influences in ‘Opticamente Avanzando’ which unwinds over 12 minutes of deep, mesmeric melodic, contemplative electronica with hints of '90s UK rave influences. Check the grins when the killer bassline drops halfway through!

The glossy melodies, jazzy motifs and hip-tugging bass of ‘OP.AV’ and the breakbeat house of ‘Interlazados’ channel more lo-fi, ambient house influences but all sent through that unique Boundary filter. Finally, the brain-warming, hypnagogic, tempo-changing rhythms of ‘Planos de Ausencia Casualidad’ could be the EP highlight and recalls the work of Lone and Actress.

With previous releases on LA based label Point Records and Paris’ Third Try label (Axel Boman, SFV Acid), Boundary’s emergence represents a promising prospect for the electronic music world, and ‘Interlazados’ another essential release on Secretsundaze.
